So I get my Jungle carbine from SOG and of course it is in dire need of a breakdown and cleaning. Well all went well on the take down but reassembly yielded.....you guessed it an extra piece.

The piece I speak of is a small locking washer that came from the safety assembly but I'll be darned if I know where.

Now the gun is reassembled, sans locking washer, and everything appears to be working fine. The safety when pushed all the way forward lets the gun fire. The safetey when pulled all the way rearward does not allow the gun to fire or the bolt to move. Are these the only two settings?

Everything else seems just fine. The gun has character but cleaned up pretty nicely.

Well any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. I know we have a cruffler or two here.

As always thanks for letting me dip into the pool of your knowledge.

Here are pictures in case anybody is wondering what the SOG Jungle Carbines look like. I have more cleaning to do but I did manage to do at least start. The barrel seems to have pretty strong rifling and the gun is solid as a rock. The bolt is very smooth after cleaning some of the gunk out.

There is no lock washer included in a #5 SMLE safety assembly. At least not factory original. God knows what was added, or for what reason in the 60 years or so since it was built.

There IS a lock washer that goes on the forward trigger guard screw, but that's the only one on this model of SMLE.

Unless it's the guard screw washer that's somehow been misplaced into the safety, and everything is working Ok, I'd not worry about it.
Don't pitch it for a while, just in case.

Thanks for the input.

Got another question. I was breaking her down for the preliminary cleaning and I could get the action and barrel completely removed from the stock.

Can anybody give me any advice as to how to remove the entire action from the stock?

One other question just to make sure I have this correct. The saftey on the Enfield is a two position safety only, correct? What I mean is all the way forward is FIRE and all the way back, locks the bolt into position and SAFES the weapons. There is no third position like on a Mauser (FIRE, SAFE, SAFE/BOLT LOCK). Do I have this correct?

Thanks again.
Chris.

yes, that is correct. I had one once that would fire with the safety applied and in that case the end of the shaft on the thumbpiece had sheared off.

Did you remove the large screw from the back of the stock?? Takes a LOOONG big screwdriver.

Uhhh Large screw in the back of the stock. Mmmmm, nope don't seem to recall performing that necessary little action.

Is it accessable by removing the butt plate and then using a long screwdriver in the hollowed out area in the stock. I didn't even think to look there.

I don't play stupid on TV but..............:uhoh:

Thanks I will give that a try tonight.

To get the buttplate and pad off, you need to remove the "screws" on the top and bottom sides of the plate.

This is actually a screw and tube arrangement. In other words, you need to hold one screw head with one screwdriver, and unscrew the other end with another screwdriver.
When you get the actual screw out, use a long punch or blunt nail to push the long tubular portion out the other side.

Inside the stock is a long bolt that holds the butt stock on the receiver ring.

When removing the stock bolt, BE CAREFUL. If the driver slips, or isn't in the slot properly, the screwdriver can go right through the thin side of the stock.
