308 Upper Receiver Woes

Since I live in CA I am legally unable to own a DPMS lower so I have purchased a POF-USA lower to build my 308 AR-10 rifle on.

I would *LOVE* to use a DPMS upper receiver, but I would like to have an upper that mates well with the POF lower. I know there are ~okay~ sleeves to take up the slack of the smaller takedown pins, but I am willing to have sleeves with tighter tolerances CNC'ed instead. A tight fit is important on this particular weapon as I intend to use it for competition.

Does anyone know of any upper receivers (aside from POF uppers) that provide a snug fit? If not, can anyone provide any tips for this setup?

This is an AR-10 style rifle, right?

If so, the closeness of upper receiver fit to the lower receiver does not affect accuracy since your sights/scope are only mounted to the upper. Look at some Hi Power Service Rifles, there's plenty of slop between the upper and lower.

this is what we have to go through in California to have an OFF list lower (oll)


on top of that, you cant have a collapsible stock, flash hider, or pistol grip with a 30 round mag. or you can have those, but with only a 10 rd fixed mag. and heaven forbid, you have those with a 30 round FIXED mag=nono. you CAN have a 30 round detachable mag IF you are featureless, with no pistol grip no flash hider, no collapsible stock, BUT you Can have a muzzle break (depends on a, how its marketed, and if its small hole vs/large hole

In fact, I understand (albeit from the internetz) that POF make a higher quality product.

The DPMS .308 is one of only a few AR-10 type options, and has an outstanding reputation for accuracy. It may not be pricey or "mil-spec" but for shooting small groups under sporting conditions it works great.

I have shot the DPMS 308 and the POF in both 223 and 308 flavors. POF is a nice product but it's not what everyone wants, and a 308 POF rifle costs around $3000 if you can find one. The POF rifles are front-heavy, have rails that not everyone wants, and are probably not as accurate as one of the free-floated DPMS 308 setups. Did I mention that the 24" DPMS setups regularly do 1 MOA or better?

Sorry for the lag in following up guys. I'm usually better about it than that.

Freonr22 has it right. California gun laws suck; there's no denying that. But the law says that any lower receivers listed on the assault weapon ban list are not allowed in the state. DPMS is probably the first one on the list. So no DPMS .308 for me. As much as they suck, laws are laws.

POF uppers have more going on which decreases reliability. Also the increased complexity means more $$$. I'm not wanting a complete DPMS upper, just the upper receiver. I'm planning on having a custom cut Krieger barrel mated to it.

Coldwar shooters supposedly makes them, but I hear the tolerances are a bit loose and the upper still rattles around a bit. I just feel a little "icky" about spending $2k for a rifle and there being enough slack between the receivers to have it rattle. Just wondering if there are any alternatives. Like someone else mentioned - there aren't many other options out there for AR-10's aside from DPMS, Armalite, and POF.

OK, you basically need an "off list lower" in .308 setup. Some other options are CMMG, which makes .308 lowers (DPMS compatible) in both a standard version and a version that uses G3 magazines, and a company out of Montana whose name I forget, which makes similar products.

I agree with the $$$ part but as for "decreases reliability" ... . I have two POF rifles, a P-415 and a P-308. Both are very reliable and accurate and to me are worth every penny. I have a spare BM lower and I'm thinking about adding another POF P-415 upper to it ... that's how much I like POF stuff.
