I am new to reloading, but not so new I haven't made some mistakes. I bought bullets for a 454 Cass intending to load them in my LColt.
With that lesson in mind, I want to buy some .358 for a 35 Rem. But as I have a Rem 7600 and a box mag I want to go the rout of spire point. I know about Hornady, I would like to see if there is anything out there with a little better BC that will open at the relatively slow speeds of the Rem at 150 yards or less.

Thanks,
Greg

I own a 35 Rem. and the round I use is the Rem. 200gr bullet. RN, loaded with IMR 4064. Out to about 125yds. (my longest shot) dead on and deadly.

I stay away from ballistic tips because here in south Texas, we may shoot a hog as well as a deer. I find them a little less desirable than soft points or round nose.

I shoot( sometimes) a .35 Whelan, which is a little different cat, but it appears to me that a heavy bullet, say 225 or 250, especially with a spire point, and limited by magazine length, is going to take up a lot of room in your already somewhat limited case. Someone, Speer or Sierra maybe, makes a 180 grain .35; they aren't real popular with the .35 Whelan crowd, so they may be somewhat hard to find...

Yes, I'm thinking it will have to be a 180 or at most 200 (that is what the Rem usu shoots). I figure the length will matter. Again, my concern is that I get info on a spire point that WILL open at slower speeds. Please :).
Greg

To open up at slow speeds I'd look at the Hornady Flex Tip bullets. Also a quality cup and core bullet like the Speer hot-core, sierra pro hunter, or hornady Spire point will be just fine.

The problem with most spire points in the .35 Rem is that you have to seat them very deep in the case, giving up powder space. The case is pretty small already, and most loads will fill the case or even be compressed with a 200gr RN. I would stick with the 180 Speer, 200 Rem corelokt, or the Hornady 200 FTX. Leverevolution powder will give you an extra 100+fps with published loads, and can safely be loaded hotter than that in your 7600.

At 150 yards there isn't enough difference in pointed bullets and round nose to worry about.

I've shot, loaded, and hunted with the .35Rem for many years.
I too, had a Rem. 7600 in .35Rem. I didn't like the ergonomics of the fore-end and that it rattles. The rifle was stellar accurate. A much heavier charge than listed of H322 and a Sierra 200gr RN would shoot cloverleafs at 100yds.

Bullet expansion is THE issue with the .35Rem. With factory level loads, which to quote John Barsness are loaded to "burrito fart" pressures, velocites of 2,000fps or even less are problematic.

The two best bullets for the .35Rem are the Remington 200gr Corlokt RNSpt, and the Sierra 200gr RN.
They are both now becoming available again.
For accuracy, the Sierra is the champ. For game performance, it's a draw in my experience. The hardest I've ever hit game with any cartridge (that includes the .45/70, .375Ruger, and .300RUM; is with the .35Rem and either of the above mentioned bullets.

My advice is to use either H4895 or H322 and start half-way between starting loads and max, and work up. With either powder in the Rem. 7600, (Marlin 336, too) I find that you can't get enough of either in the case to cause a problem. (Don't try this with an antique Remington Auto, or T/C Contender....).

I've got a Browning BLR in .358win that won't give appreciable better performance than what I get from the Marlin.... I prefer the Marlin as it's equally accurate but with a drammatically better trigger...

The key to the .35Remington is proper sight-in. Sight in either of the aforementioned bullets loaded to the easily obtained 2,300fps w/7600 +3" at 100yds and you're set to 200yds.
Zero is ~160yds and -4" at 200yds. In otherwords, point and blast to 200yds.

The longest shot I've ever made on a deer with the .35Rem was in 2008. I shot a ~160lb 8pt buck at ~230yds. I shot over it the first two times.... The deer couldn't believe I was shooting at HIM! First two shots I held over the top at the hairline. Third shot, I held on the spine took off the top of the heart... shooting off-hand...(explains the misses).
Unless I'm hunting over a large field or cut-over in the evenings, I don't feel handicapped by the .35's trajectory. compared to the .45/70 with most loads (not all!) it shoots like a laser-beam... (almost! ha..)

I've used the 200gr FTX and find that it dosen't expand well. (at least the batch I have). At 25yds @ 2,250fps m/v I had one go through the heart of another ~160lb 8pt buck avg size deer for this area.(shot in my backyard on 01/01/2010 @ 5:30pm). I got essentially zero blood trail and entry and exit wound were size of pencil lead... not the whole pencil...

My other choice for the .35 would be the Hornady 180gr PtSpt SSP (single shot pistol). This is an "interlok" and holds together well, but also expands very readily. It is essentially intended for the T/C Contender pistols.Try 42.5gr of H4895...

IMO, the other 200gr bullets as well as the Speer 180 and 220gr bullets are too-hard for the .35Rem for reliable expansion, especially beyond 100yds. From my experience with the .358BLR, the 200gr Hornady PtSpt is adequate for any use except perhaps the brown/grizzly bears. For these, I'd opt for something more powerful than the .358, hence the .375Ruger.... I've yet to retrieve a Sierra or anything else from the .35 from a deer. The only .35 bullet I've recovered was a 200gr Corlokt. It penetrated ~30" of deer (Texas heart-shot!), broke femur, penetrated torso, broke opposite side humerous and was lodged under skin in classic "deadliest mushroom in the woods". Weighs 187gr...

edited to add; I now as of the great hoarding; cast my .35Rem bullets. 200gr RCBS FNGC. I'm no longer at the whims of the markets...H4895 is still the propellant of choice for both the .35Rem and .358...

Do try the new Nosler 200gr AccuBond. If it will indeed expand down to 1,600fps it would be excellent in the M760. However, I've yet to see any available...
