Just for the fun of it I pulled out my 8" supermag md 40 and my 7.5" Redhawk and handled them. The heavy underlug of the supermag distorts the picture but the extra barrel length convinced me to go with the 7.5" like the redhawk.
As a comparison look at the two rounds lower left. The 357 Max is on the right and the "puny" 357 Magnum is next to it. It takes a much bigger cylinder and frame to handle the Supermag rounds.
See how much longer the supermag cylinder is?
