.38 Brush Same as 9mm Brush?

I have seen brushes specifically for .38 before. The other day I went to the local shop to get a brush for my new S&W 642 and didn't see any. I asked an employee and he pointed me to brushes labeled 9mm/.38/.357.

Hence my question: Will the bronze 9mm brush I currently have harm my .38 snubbie? I didn't know if it would be bigger than the combo brush he recommended and whether I should avoid it.

I feel kinda stupid asking, but I guess I want to try and squirrel the $1.39 for another brush under my mattress.

No difference between a 9mm and a .38/.357 brush. If anything, a 9mm specific brush would be a tad smaller than a .38/.357 brush.

I use a 9mm brush in my 642. Bronze is softer than steel, so you don't need to worry about damaging the rifling. If a bronze brush harms it, you won't get 50 rounds downrange before the barrel is ruined anyway.

38 cal = .357 dia.
9mm = .355 dia.
that said the brushs are probably the same i dought that they are created to 0.002 tolerance.

Though both brushes are the same diameter, it appears that those marked .38/.357 are a bit longer than those marked 9mm/.380. Curious.

The .38 is longer than the 9, so the chamber is longer...

9mm, .380, .38 and .357 brushes

The brushes are all the same diameter.

The revolver brushes tend to be longer (more cleaning
required for barrel and five or six chambers (or seven
on some models)) also revolvers likely to be used with
lead bullets than 9mm pistols.

But they are basically interchangeable.

The correct size brush is nice for cleaning the .38 barrel but when you do the Cly's is to small:banghead: I use my older .45 brush's to clean the cly.how many times you read where the guy shoots .38 and then the .357 won't slide all the way in.Mostly because the brush is to small to clean the cly and the powder residue

Handgun brushes are shorter than rifle brushes, though. This is so in a revolver they can "turn around" in the cylinder window and in an auto pistol they can do the same in the area between barrel and slide. So don't use a .35 caliber rifle brush in a handgun.

I'm pretty sure by turn around he means the that when the bristles reach the chamber, they straighten out, and when you pull back, they bend in the opposite direction from when they went in.
