I just bought my first Glock for my mother. I got her the 3rd Gen Glock 26 as it is a sub-compact 9mm that is very smooth (very light recoil).

I love this gun. Easy to pack, accurate as I can ask for coming from an ultra short barrel. So now i'm gonna get me one.

My question is whether i should go with what i know to be a very well rounded piece or upgrade to the .40 cal 4th Gen Glock 27. Any thoughts? Has anybody had a chance to compare the two? I just don't know what the recoil will be like with the heavier .40 cal round. Any and all input is much appreciated.

Thanks

I never took to my Gen3 26. I shot it well, but always felt slippery. I absolutely love my Gen4 19. I imagine I'd like the gen4 26/27 as well. The grip is a real improvement IMO.

Tom,

Which one fits your hand and you shoot best with.

I have several 3ed gen Glocks and am quite happy with them. But I've never tried a 4th gen.

And unless the 4th Gen is a huge leap in ability I'd just keep my 3ed gens.

Thanks for all the help folks . . . much obliged.

I guess what i really wanna know is if the new recoil reduction system is actually a huge leap in handling/comfort and accuracy or just a minor improvement.

Thanks again

As much as I would love to have the extra power of the Gen4 .40, I would hate to give up the accuracy and comfort I am currently enjoying with the Gen 3 9mm

I have a gen 4 G26. I think 9mm is plenty for SD. .40 cal is very snappy and could be more difficult to control than 9mm. I really like the gen 4's I have a 34 and had a 17 which I traded for the 34.
Don't worry about gen 4 issues. They are solid guns.
The back straps and oversized mag release are very nice.

The recoil system is the same for the Gen3 and Gen4 subcompacts, the Gen three has the dual recoil ass. the only difference is the grip and mag button.

I had a 26 and liked it,I have a 27 and love it.
If you reload and are not recoil sensitive I highly recomend the 27.
9mm is cheaper to shoot,If I didnt reload I would go with the 26.
The 27 is the only 40 I own and I shoot the heck out of it,potent accurate
concealable. One of the most shootable 40 sub compacts out there.
I have a 9 mm converstion barrel for it and it works great,I put a few hundred rounds through it and it just sits in the drawer as I dont mind shooting the 40's.I dont find a significant difference in my split times or accuracy.YMMV.
I'd suggest renting one and putting 100 rnds. throught it then make your decission based on first hand exp.

I guess I went the other direction - I sold my Gen3 G27, and replaced it with a Gen4 G26.

I have had both over a 16 year period, "i believe, thats when they came out" and like the 26, because of it's low recoil and with the plus2 mag adapter I get 13 chances to survive. Also its a bit lighter. I would go with a 27 if I were a bit younger, but I carry 2 guns, and at 60+years, they start getting cumbersome by days end.
With the hi tech ammo that is around now, the 9mm is a powerful round in plus p. I use the corbon powerball, and a extra mag of fmj's in case of a barrier, "like a car door" and also a glock19 reload, so I have 28 rounds, plus my spare with another 7. If that isn't enough, it just wasn't my day.
It should be enough for several incidents considering 2 or 3 rounds usually ends a gun battle. But these days with carloads of home invasion crews riding around, you just never know, we had 39, home invasions in one month in my county, so it's not far fetched at all. And better to be able to survrive than worry about a few extra ounces, or if the police have a free unit to respond.
Don't know if it was here or someare else that a man got a misdemeanor and fine, for abusing the 911 number.
His mom called while the bad guys were trying to break in, he drove an hour, still no police called 2 more times in a 3 hour period till they got there, and they issued him a $500.00 fine and a charge of abusing the 911 system. So you are really on your own, unless you live in the station.

I went from Gen3 G27 to a Gen4 G26 as well...
I am plenty experienced with handguns...but no matter how much I tried to convince myself that .40 was a great round....
I never got 100% competent with it!

The Gen3 G27 was a slight bit too "chubby" in the grip, and slippery when I was sweating..
I just put a brand new Gen4 G26 on layaway, and am excited to begin carrying this beauty.
Love the subcompacts...but will be happier with the G26!

I love my gen 4 G19. The grip texture is excellent for carry, not to abrasive. And the dual recoil spring(obviously all subcompact Glocks have is as well) reduces frame battering and reduces the felt recoil a little bit as well.

The backstrap system is a great plus. I don't use a backstrap at all, which makes my 19 a 19sf in a way. It points much more naturally to me with no backstrap. With the medium backstrap it gives it the standard gen 3 backstrap.

The mag release is enlarged and easier to hit without shifting the pistol around in your hand when trying to release the mag. It is also reversible for lefties.

It comes with 3 mags, instead of the 2 mags with the gen 3.

Besides, the gen 3's will not be made forever. I like having a pistol that I know the pistol, and the parts will be made for a long time to come. The gen 3's will be history, and will not be made at all eventually. The gen 4's will be made for a long time to come.

Ok..... I'm don't ranting.... Just go ahead and buy the gen 4 already!!! :)
