The Stars At Night Are Big And Bright....Deep In T
Okay, first off let me say that I am a novice shooter, not ignorant. I may not come across in the correct terminology. But with that being said. I saw video of a hunter firing a 4 bore. Form a standing position. WOW!! I fired my 06' from the bench and it threw me back. And the guy in the video look as though it wasn't that big a deal. I mean wow 1,000gr. Ammo!! That's got to pack some punch.

Anyone ever fire a 4 bore. Now I've seen the comparisen of bullett size. But I need to learn how not to blink during the shot.

I used to wind my Brother-in -law up Re his love of Black powder firearms ! As he could never see that I was just Funning with him .I uesd terms such as front end loader ,Charcoal burner ECT & in return he would generaly abuse me not relising I owned a Ruger cap& ball . He approched me one day reguarding A rifle he claimed I would not be Game to fire ! This of course was Like a Red Rag to a Bull !
I traveled ,some 400kms ,to Adelaide to fire this "Rifle" .There was quite a gathering of the members of the Club my bother in law belonged to & any other person would have read the danger signs (not me though ) .Ah Yes it was a 4 BORE alright ....Converted from a punt gun :what: ! A home made stock fitted ! the methord of loading was Powder, powder ,more powder ! Toilet paper as wadding Followed by what seamed to be enough Shot to have been used to ballast the Ark!
I'm told that there are ways of shooting a 4Bore that are quite bearable but I have yet to discover them :cuss:

Your '06 will hit you much harder off the bench than it will when standing, because you are typically leaning into it when firing off hand and your whole body can rock with the recoil. Try it. You'll find that the average '06 is no big deal to shoot standing.

By the way, I haven't fired a 4 bore. I have fired an 8, however, which is pretty potent in it's own right. I also know a fellow who uses a 10 gauge double loaded with 2 ounces of shot (that's 875 grains) over 150 grains of black powder in cowboy matches, and he's been kind enough to let me experience it on several occasions. You feel the concussion more than you hear the boom, but it's not particularly unpleasant.

The only 4 gauges I have seen were intended for market hunters and were intended to be mounted to small boats (punts) that are skulled into position and then the gun discharged into flocks of ducks sitting on the water.

Try it prone

There's a very interesting 2-part article on a modern 4-bore rifle on safari in Africa - recommended.

Part 1

Part 2

Preacherman, funny enough I read that article a while back and it's what put "make a 4 bore cartridge rifle, register as DD, have a blast" on my to-do list.

Not an answer to your question, but I have seen quite a few 4 bores. We have a gun show here in Las Vegas at least once a year called the Antique Arms Show and they usually have a number of them there.

They are very expensive. We are talking about prices that would buy you three or four new pickups.
