My friend has a 410 bolt action. and it has alot of rust on the bbl. and the bolt is a bit hard to poll back it needs oiled. i want to help him get it looking good how would we reblue it and get the rust off? and get the bolt easy to poll back? oh yeah how much is the blue going to be? and where can we get it?

i too had a old bolt 410 sitting in the cornmer for a while but i got around to fixing it jsut took oil and steel wool and a lot of elbow grease i will probably be flamed for tis but go get some simple blueing like cool blue or suiper blue which is what i use and jsut follow directions on the bottle

4/0 steel wool, a good oil and elbow grease will do wonders.

Rust, except for the lightest cases, is permanent. Cold Blue will do for smalller areas.

It probably never will look like new, but it can look and work better.

Good luck...

I may have the same gun (Savage 59), and have had the same issues.

To remove my bolt, there is a set screw on the receiver. Remove the screw and then remove the bolt (you may have to pull the trigger to get the bolt past).
I use CLP / Breakfree. In very liberal quantities, soak the bejeezus out of the entire thing and let it sit for a few days to a week.
Use a brass/bronze/stiff nylon brush and scrub away all of the crud that has been lifter by the CLP.
The action should be much smoother by now.

For rebluing, I prefer 'Blue Wonder" as a cold blue. I did the birchwood/casey stuff and it wipes off entirely too easily:cuss:
'Blue Wonder' is pretty damned strong and seems to hold up well to cleaning----you MUST follow the instructions.
Brownells and Cabela's has it (CAbela's is cheaper);) .

And alot of elbow grease woth 4/0 steel wool and alot of patience in the metal prep will have you a decent looking gun for not much moolah.

Man do I miss my old .410 bolt action!

Wish I had another, to replace the one my brother :fire:
sawed off and cut the stock down on... :banghead:

All these years later I haven't seen another quite like it, but I'd know it if I saw it...
