not apple to apples but a 124 grain soft point 7.62x39 take down deer dont see why a 180 44 mag wouldn't. like i said not apple to apples but still thats a decent pill coasting through the air. i have no 44 ma hunting expertise but it looks like others here say its ok

You put that 180 grain (or 240gr ) in a 20" lever action, and I would prefer it over a 7.62 X 39 out to 100 yards. A 44 mag out of a rifle is surprisingly powerful. You can place your shots much more accurately with a rifle and you gain at least 300 fps over a revolver.

Handguns?, handguns are hard to shoot well.
 
To be blunt, use the standard Remington 240gr hollowpoint. If that is not available use the standard Remington 240gr soft nose. Either will get the job done for sure. Avoid the light bullets.

The 240gr 44 mag load is standard for a reason, it works and works well.
