.45-70 "Collar-buttons"

I got some 150 grain LSWC bullets in .45-70 that are supposed to be for "gallery" practice and plinking.

But my Hornady seating die won't seat them deep enough. The bullet is about half the length of a 405 grain. The seater needs to push them down about .085" further.

Anybody else load "Collar-buttons" in .45-70?

What seating die do you use?

Bullet seating

Take a piece of wood dowel of the right diameter and super glue or epoxy it temporarily to the end of your bullet seating punch. It can be easily removed whenever desired.

Thanks, good idea! Sounds easy and workable...

I'm new to reloading rifle rounds, and still sort of scared of the dies, process, and all, and, I guess, not particularly creative anyway.

I seat 45/70 light load .457" lead ball loads all the way down into the case to compress the .5 gr of Bullseye. If I seat at the mouth, the bullet bounces off wood. If I seat deep, the bullet penetrates 1" of wood. The noise is the same.

What I give up is accuracy. The bullet is going so fast when it hits the riflings, that it just sheers off lead. But, I am not shooting that far anyway with that load.

The real trick is to make a case with .5 gr capacity and seat at the mouth. That is allot of solid brass, or something, but it would be the best of both worlds.
