Does anyone have loading recipes for a 45-70 , 340 gr. cast bullet modern lever action. henry rifle to be exact
Thank you

24 grains of 2400 powder is my go to cast bullet load for the .45-70. I usually shoot 320 grain bullets but this load is safe for 340 grain.

This is a great range load IMO. Mild enough for all day shooting. Recoil similar to a .30-30.

Trim your cases and use a good crimp.

I don't have a hunting load for cast bullets. The Remington factory load works for me.

Modern lever-action data starts around 1800fps with that weight of bullet, and will push those bullets way too fast... you will likely get leading. My suggestion is to try a powder like IMR4198 and keep those bullets at or below 1500fps.

FYI, Hodgdon's online data has 325 and 350grn data for modern levers... which means jacketed bullets, because of the velocities. If you look at their Trapdoor data, they have a data set for the 385grn cast bullet... that would be more down your alley. You could easily start with the 385grn bullet data, and adjust for your slightly lower bullet weight.

i'm casting out of a lee mould at 340gr and i been out testing different powders and today out of my marlin using a 340gr cast with imr 4064 at 38.0gr shot very nice tight group! and i'm using my homebrew lube but lee alox will be just fine!
