Just Ice'd a 200lb wild boar in Lyons, GA this weekend. The shot was 30 yards with a 5" PT1911 230 grain Winchester hollow point. Shot was a little high behind front shoulder. Hit entered in pigs left side, shattered spine and deflected down into lung and heart. The bullet, or what was left of it exited low behind right shoulder. The shot instantly put him down with only a small half squeal. I was very impressed with this round as this is the first game taken with my pistol. While I was cleaning the pig I found that the whole right side (exit wound) ribs were ruined. This was no little pig by any means. Wild pigs skin is very thick as well. It really suprised me that the bullet exited the amimal.

Nice shooting!

Surprising you got a thru-n-thru with a 230gr in .45ACP. Was this just a standard load, or was this some sort of +p ammo?

Tell us, please!

+1 on "what load?" And +1 on nice shooting! :p

Here I was ready to say something like "I think a .45 auto isn't as good a choice as a .44 Mag or heavy duty 45 Colt, :scrutiny: but there ya go - action beats opinion 100% of the time.

No kidding, though, I wouldn't have expected even a good hollow point out of a 45 auto to be able to do that much damage and put a hog down  with that much authority. :what: Gawd, hogs are really tough customers.

By all means - let us know what load did the deed. There's more than a few of us who carry for SD that might reconsider our carry ammo  Thanks for sharing.

And... congrats again. Post a pic if you have one.

It was just your standard pressure winchester USA .45 hollowpoint in the white box. has a pic of a glock and says for personal protection on it. From the size of the exit wound and pieces and shards of bone that scratched up my hand while cleaning, my guess is that after hitting the bone the bullet turned into a 230 grain razorblade and cut its way out. lots of blooding and bone shards going everywhere.

Hey, it was a .45 auto! If you'd hit it in the hoof, it woulda took it's whole leg right off! Just like all the old war stories, right?

Just kiddin' ya, good shooting and congrats! I'm not a hunter, but I'd probably go for some wild pig action if I got the chance. I've never seen any in my entire life though. Except for the dead javelina I hit on a Florida highway about 1am one night. That'll sure mess up your front-end alignment.
