So i bought some Hornady XTP's today to load up for my 1911 (Ruger SR1911). It wasn't until i got home that i realized i bought a box 230 grain .451 diameter, and a box of 240 grain .452 diameter. Would there be an issue with shooting one or the other since they're different diameter? Both boxes say for .45 CAL so, i just assumed they were good before reading further.....Suggestions? Cheers, hvychev77

The 230 gr .451s are for .45ACP.
The 240 gr .452s are really for .45 Colt, but you can shoot them in the auto with appropriate powder charge and seating. The extra .001" on diameter won't matter. I have shot a good many .452" Armscors in .45 ACP.

Yes you can shoot 240's or 250's but the recoil will be high and it will be hard on the gun. I recommend you take the box of 240's back and trade it for 230's.

i figured as much......the guys at the store are pretty cool. I'll swap 'em out next time i'm down there. Thanks for the replies fellas....cheers, hvychev77

You might find the .452/240 shoot really good in your gun. I routinely use this bullet in my 1911s but have also installed 20 lb. recoil springs to avoid battering the frames & slides. From my experience, most .45ACPs are .4525 in the grooves to start with.

Haha, well, I only bought 100 count so, I might load them and shoot them. I can guarantee you the bosslady ain't trying to.hear of any new gun purchases. I got two young 'ens still in diapers so my money goes towards that these days:) it's a good thing though, wouldn't have it any other way.

The 240gr XTPs in .45 caliber are meant for .454 and .460 S&W. They have thicker jackets than even those bullets intended for .45 Colt for controlled expansion at revolver velocities to 2000FPS and beyond. They also will have a cannelure for roll crimping. They generally run about $7-$10 more than the 230 gr XTPs meant for .45ACP. While they would work, since they wouldn't expand at .45ACP velocities, they'd just be very expensive target ammo.

Thats nothing. I bought a case of large rifle berdan primers a while back.i had no clue you could even buy them at the time. I can't even give them away.

I've shot .452 diameter 240 grain bullets out of my Glock before. Recoil was "stout" even with a suitably reduced powder charge. Wasn't kind to the gun, wouldn't recommend shooting too many of them. I went through a batch of 100.

Be careful when you load those. Probably not going to find data for 240gr 45ACP in any books. I think I reduced the starting load another 5% from 230gr? I dunno. It's been 15+ years.

There are some Swiss 7.5 shooters that reload Berdan cases on this board. Do a search for K31 and dig through the posts you're bound to find some.

Try selling them here in the classifieds.
