45 Long Colt bullet

I recently bought some of Hornady's 255 gr. FN Cowboy bullets for my 45 long colt. Has anybody had any experience with this bullet? Maybe someone has a good load for this bullet? I bought them for just plinking but use Hornady's 250 gr XTP/HP for more serious stuff like hunting.

Hard to go wrong with 11.0 grains of HS6 or 6 grains of HP38 (the latter load may be a bit position sensitive.) For a full power (in the Colt SAA or New Service) I like 16 grains of Li'l Gun behind this bullet.

8 grains of Unique for normal full power loads, 6.5 for a really soft plinking load.

Those cowboy bullets are probably not lubed with anything but a wax coating, and they will be very soft. Finding a powder that won't push them too hard or burn through the wax and lead the barrel will not be all that easy. Unique has been the absolute best for me under these circumstances.

The lube seems to be a dry lube of some sort. I just loaded some with 6 grs. of unique and as soon as I can I'll be going to the range to see how they work. Like I said all I'm looking for is a good plinking load nothing too heavy.

6.0 Grains of Red Dot.

Nothing I've ever tried comes close to that for accuracy. You'll be pleased.

Dodge, have you had time to shoot the 6.0 grs. Of unique yet? I am looking for a CAS load using a 250 gr. Bullet and Unique powder. I have shot 7.5 grains but was thinking about going lighter, but didn't know how much lighter I could go.

Yes, I have but not through a chrony just some plinking at ice chunks in the creek. From felt recoil I would have to say it's equal to factory rounds or a bit lighter. I'm now in the process of loading more as I think I found my plinking load.
