Just picked up some 450 Grain 45-70 bullets .458.
Now that I have them checked my loading manuals and don't have any listng for loads. Does anyone have any recommedations where to look.
Will be using them for target.

What kind of rifle?

What kind of bullets, jacketed or lead?

Yes, it matters.

It sounds to me like you bought .458 Mag bullets.

If you have a lever-action rifle, the crimp cannulure will be in the wrong place for them to work through the action.

Guys sorry
Have just gotten a Marlin 1895ss built 1994 If this helps that would be great for any info.

I have seen data for up to 500 grain jacketed and 475 - 535 grain cast bullets. If you load a 450 grain bullet like it was one of the next heavier ones, neither you nor the target will be able to tell a difference.

You still haven't told us what brand or type of bullets you have, like I ask yesterday.

Cast lead bullets?
Jacketed bullets?
What brand of jacketed bullets??

Again, I would guess you may have bought bullets for the .488 Magnum, and if so, they are too long to work in a Marlin lever-action because the crimp cannulure is in the wrong place.

I have cast lead bullets. My bullet guy had some of these he needed to get rid of.

I would go to the online Hodgdon Load Data.

I'd look at 45-70 (Trapdoor) and a 485g bullet weight to get an idea of where to start. Then I'd try IMR 4895 or H4198, but that's just my preference.

First thing I'd do is put together a dummy of those 450g bullets you have and see if they'll seat at 2.55" and feed and function OK for you. If that looks fine, I'd start low and see if I could find a good shooting load around 1300 fps.

Good Luck!

What kind of loads are you after?

You can launch that bullet at anywhere between 1,000 and 1,600 fps in a Marlin.

What brand are the bullets? If they were home cast, which mold did they come from?
