I am going to start reloading for 454 Casull and had a question or two. I have a Ruger SRH Toklat and am looking to reload so I can shoot mild loads at the range. I already have some commercially-made Underwood ammo for times when out in the woods.

Will I need to get a gas-check bullet? I've been reloading 45 Colt with a MBC 300 gr bullet which I've shot from this Toklat and thought about using those bullets, which do not have a gas check. Will this bullet work if I load on this mild side?

I plan on using Unique which I already have. For simply plinking at the range, any reason not to use it?

I need to go out and get some small rifle magnum primers.

Any other words of advice as I venture into the reloading world of 454 Casull?

you will get your best accuracy using H110 I use 27.5 gr under a 300gr G/C boolit recoil not too bad this is out of a Encore pistol

I have always used standard small rifle primers. I haven't seen data yet that called for small rifle magnum, so you may save some time.

Unique will work, but I have not been happy with the results of Unique and Win231 out of magnums. They seem to make the recoil snappy, the powder burn dirty, and the bullets run slow. I still play with it sometimes to make lower recoil stuff, because I don't like to go too low on H110.

But the bulk of my 454 is loaded with XTP Mag bullets and full-house loads of H110.

The Lyman 49th edition shows small rifle magnum, CCI 450, but maybe it doesn't make any difference.

For plinking loads that bullet is fine. if you use unique powder you will not need magnum primers to set it off.

Maybe just pick a load in a loading book from the ruger only section of 45 colt. Those would be mild loads for a .454 casull. If you really want mild loads just use the 45 colt SAA load data.

May have to look in the rifle section of a reloading manual for the SAA loads as the 300 grain bullets are usually to long for 45 colt SAA guns.
