50 cal hornady sst

ATTN: NOOB QUESTION
Sooo, I have always been a powerbelt person, but I decided I want to get into sabots not only to save money, but for better consistancy and accuracy as well. I am going to try out the hornady SST low drag sabots. The cabelas catalog says these go for $14 per 20. Do the bullets include the little plastic sabot or do you have to buy them separate? I just wanted to make sure. Thanks

They come with sabots.
Very accurate out of my TC bbl too.That is the "Shock Wave" bullet.

Im sure the hornady SST is the same thing as the T/C Shock Wave at Wall*Mart.

The Hornady website says that boxes of 50 Hornady 250 grain .45 SST's are "coming soon".

I too have used those new SST Hornadys, and like them. My best load is one of those in front of 70gr 777. The Shock-waves that are comparable to the SST, is called "Super Glide". Different from ordinary Shock waves.

the shock waves are are a bit more expensive. and I am cheap/poor, so I am going to get the hornady sst low drag sabots when I go to cabelas. i have read a lot of good reviews on them at cabelas.com and elsewhere. Not to say the shockwaves are not good, they are just more money than I want to pay.

i have shot these through my optima. in my gun, they are sensitive to velocity. the faster they move, the better the accuracy. @ 80 grains of 777, they shoot about a 3&1/2" group. @ 120 grains of 777, they are about 1&1/2". in my gun, there is a world of difference.

I plan on using them with 100 grains of pyrodex pellets as this seems to be the load my gun(cva wolf) is most accurate with. If I can get 2 inches or less at 100 yds out of my 24" bbl, I will be pleased. Moooose102: what grain bullet were you using? that might make a difference as to how much power you need to stabilize it.

If you can find some cheaper leads bullets with similiar weight and diameter (.452) to the SST's, then practice with those at various distances.
Save the more expensive SST's for fine tuning & hunting.
It's always good to have a few different back up loadings and it's also fun to shoot at closer targets while using less powder too.
Have you used any loose powders yet?

I dont bring the MZ to the range TOO much, but when I do, ill only shoot maybe 20 rounds, so im fine with the 13 bucks for 20 sabots. and no I have not tried loose powder. I know it is a bit cheaper but I do like the convenience of pellets.

I recently bought 1 lb. of American Pioneer FFFG at Cabela's for under $14.
It was the cheapest price that I've ever paid for it.
It has plenty of power for my needs and without as much felt recoil.
Just keep it tightly capped to prevent it absorbing moisture.
The loose 777 requires 15% less volume compared to other powders so it's more cost efficient to use for range practice.
Plus the loose 777 is a little more powerful than the 777 pellets so you may be able to load using slightly less.
Consistency & accuracy might improve too if the loose 777 powder isn't compacted quite as much when the bullet is rammed.

when I first got my muzzleloader I started using pellets also but was never happy with accuracy even tried several diffrent types of bullets from saboted to non saboted wasnt happy with any of them with a 2 pellet 100 grain charge, finally I switched to powder and it made a big difference in accuracy and would shoot most of the bullets I had tried previosly atleast acurate enough to be comftorable hunting with and taking a shot up to 100 yards with the pellets was lucky to stay on a paper plate at 50 yards wich is terrible. while I dont know why some have good luck with pellets and some dont they didnt work for me and have heard of others having problems with them also.

Flyboy....When December comes around look at Wall*Mart's sporting goods. I bought them in a 15 pack on some red tag sale quite cheap!

I love the 300 grain SSt's out of my omega, but just like mooose102, the faster I push them, the better they shoot. (130 grains 2F 777 gets it done)

I have only been muzzleloading for a couple years so naturally i havent tried a whole lot of powder bullet combos. But for now the pellets seem to work fine for me. If and when I get more serious about muzzleloading I will definately give loose powder a try. Until then I will keep it simple seeing as I only get out to the range 2-3 times a year with the ML. Thanks for the input guys.
