I picked up a 50cal percussion pistol today and I have no IDEA!! as to who made it or when. The barrel and all metal parts were coated with a base coat of bronze or gold colored paint then topped off with a thick coat of black paint. I have started the task of disassembling and cleaning parts ( and yes it had a live load in it). Soaked the barrel with a water based paint remover which started to soften up the paint, then using a soft wire wheel in my drill press I have most of the paint off barrel. Only stamping anywhere is on the right side just forward of the nipple. Picture is not the best but at least it will give an idea of what it is.

That looks alot like a kit pistol that I put together as a scout project in the 60's. Mine was a Pietta and a Kentucky pistol in 45 though, the barrel was in the white and the trigger and hammer were brass colored, but painted. Look under the barrel for identity marks or a brand. The stock was inletted, but in the rough with sharp edges, that required much sanding to smooth out.

CVA sold a pistol with belt hook like that. CVA Mountain pistol as I recall. Different than the Hawken pistol they sold. I have several 1970 to 1980's CVA catelogues at the office and will check them out tomorrow.

After a few hours of wire brushing and cleaning, cold blue and still more cleaning the only thing stamped on barrel or anywhere else for that matter is 50CAL. I did look at one web site and they have one that looks very much like it, Lyman Plains Pistol, kit version but still meets the looks of this thing. I have to say after removing all the heavy paint and letting the main spring smack the he$$ out of my finger the pistol is looking pretty good. Who ever had this thing left it loaded with APP powder and a 50cal ball wrapped competely with cloth, almost took an act of congress to get the ball pulled and then getting the packed/compressed APP out of the barrel. Looks like it needs in places about 1/8" of wood removed just to bring it even with the metal. Thanks guy will post better pictures when and if I ever get it finished, got another one that needs a ton of attention also but that's a horse of a different color (Colt get it ???)

I think zimmerstutzen and Bluehawk got it first. I just happen to have a picture of the one I built back in the '70's (that's 1970's).
