I took my .54 lymam out today and ill be damned its the most accurate rifle ive ever owned. 60 grains triple f holy black with roundball and patch shoots to point of aim. Heres 3 shots around 60 - 75 yards with open sights. The stock glow sights are really spot on im very impressed with them. I was aiming dead center while standing up.

Very nice man. I've taken mine out three times now and have shot about 120 round ball out of it. I use 80 grains of fffg goex with mine and really like it. I replaced the stock nipple with a hotshot nipple from track of the wolf because cci #11 caps were not as snug as I thought they could be. The new nipple makes the #11's nice and tight.

These are 100 yard targets. The one with the middle of the target missing was shot some 30 times. I don’t really take any or my shooting too seriously these days. I’m really just trying to have a good time.

I’m just gonna assume the target with four rounds touching at 100 yards was just pure luck.

What size ball and patch? What lube? Brand of powder? We want details!

Mr.james84...same as i asked blackpowderwarrior...what size ball, patch size, lube used, brand of powder ets. Details if you please!

Hornady .530 round ball, 80 grains goex fffg, .015 lubed patch from midway USA. Keep in mind it took me three range trips and some 120 rounds to get these results. I swab with a dry patch between shots to hopefully achieve some consistency. I’ve also tried Pyrodex select and triple seven, by my best accuracy comes from goex 3f. This tends to be the case with all six black powder weapons i shoot.

Hornady .530 swaged roundball with .018 pillow ticking that i smear some of my home made lube on. Goex fffg 60 grains. This Lyman is the best shooting rifle i have. It can handle 30 more grains of GOEX but 60 seems to work fine with the distance ill be taking deer at. Thanks for the kind words and chiming in!

I prefer 3f to 2f in my .54, The lyman manual that came with the rifle has its "max" load of 3f at 80 grns. "Max" load of 2f at 100 grns. So i figure 60 grns of 3Fshould theoretically be of par with 70-80 grns of 2F holy black.

I was originally using 2f, but I ordered 3f just because it allows me to have one powder for all my bp revolvers and rifles. I'm really anal about keeping things as simple as poasible. I won't exceed 80 grains.

Yeah i try and keep a decent supply of 3f. Midway has Old Eyensford in stock. But regular Goex 3f has never failed me and its like 5 or 6 bucks cheaper per pound.

You're set out to 100 yards as is. (Assuming it was 75 yards you were shooting at.) Lyman makes excellent BP guns.

Thanks for chiming in entropy. Yeah im assuming it was 75 but definately no less then 60. Before buying the rifle i had scoyred the net for reviews about different rifles and almost went with a .50 deerstalker from traditions as i see and hear good things about that little rifle. Im glad i went with the .54 Lyman instead. I needed a maneuverable rifle as i live in the Appalachias.

I considered trying old eyensford, but I have everything dialed in with goex. Switching to another powder means I have to run it through six different guns and dial everything in all over again. With four revolvers and two rifles, that's gonna take a lot of time and effort.

When I was much younger i owned German break barrel air rifle which I believe was from diana. I used to be hell bent on being able to shoot an old olive oil can at 200 yards with it. Yes I did this with a .177 air rifle with iron sights. But the point is, I went through so much effort to find the right pellet and hold to be able to do it consistently. But to be honest, black powder has made me an even better shooter.

It's just a shame that my eye sight isn't what it used to be. Just part of getting older i guess.

Lol i can relate brother. I remember shooting cans and army men with my dad and a Red Rider when i was a little guy. I eventually worked my way up to a pellet rifle and never was quite as good a shot with it but looking back hell i can probably blame the gun ;-) im a Goex fan through and through. Ive got a few lbs of 777 i keep telling myself ill try it one day! And black powder shooting has made me lose interest in my other firearms. Yeah theyre fun but nothing is like the experience of a muzzleloader. Takes me back to a simpler time. A time before i was even thought of

Go figure... I’m all set to go shooting with my brother who I haven’t seen in years. I fell off the back of a boat this morning and am all torn up now. No shooting for me. Yet another work related injury. Word of advice guys, don’t fall five feet onto you’re back on pavement. It won’t end well.

If I'm gonna fall off a boat it works better if there's water to catch you
