6.5 STW Loads

A friend of mine has a custom built 6.5 STW which he plans to take hunting. Since this is a wildcat reloading data is really hard to come by, so he was using 7mm stw data to approximate a starting point. After a few blown primers he discovered that using 7mm data may not be the best idea.

So now I'm hoping that someone can help him out a bit with a safe place to start.

He wants to use RL22 (although data for another powder would be appreciated as well) and a 140gr bullet.

I already found that site.
It only has loads for bullets up to 107gr.
He needs data for 140gr, thanks.

Reduce both maximum and starting loads at least by 10% if using 7mmSTW data.

Work up slowly and carefully. The smaller bore diameter will not allow as much powder to be burned and increases presures exponentially. (remember the gas laws from physics-101?)

FWIW; Reloader22 is a bit on the fast side for that cartridge. If you will note, RL22 is optimum for the much smaller cased 6.5x55. The 6.5's require slower powders than most of the other cartridges. This is the reason that even with H1000, the weights only went up to 107gr.

The RL25 will be a much better powder than RL22. Better yet will be Retumbo, and H50BMG.

I aquired 16lbs of WC-860 (surplus .50BMG powder). It's proved optimal in both my .300RUM and .257wbymag. I suggest checking out some of this. I aquired my stock for $50 plus hazmat and shipping from Wideners. Much cheaper than RL22. www.gibrass.com possibly still has some.

IIRC; Sierra had some 6.5WWH (Wby-Wright-Hoyer) data in one of their manuals some years back ('80's). This might be of some assistance.

If he insists on using RL22, I suggest using .264winmag data as a starting place, and expect maximum load's velocities to approximate those of the .264winmag.
