6.5x.284 Cooper

Back in May, I asked for help in reforming .284 rem. Brass to 6.5x.284 brass. I had ordered a Cooper Model 22 Phoenix and had found a great price on new .284 Brass. Anyway, "Ol'Joe", "redneck2" and "esheato" gave me some advice, and last weekend I finally got around to working on some brass. Then Wed. I got a call from my dealer saying that the Cooper was in. I picked it up on Thurs, put a 6 x 18 scope on it, and started to shoot it on Friday. I took my time and broke it in as Cooper advised. I shot it again Sat. morning, and again, this afternoon. I was using Reloader 22, and Sierra 142 gr. Match kings, along with Federal Match primers. The last two groups that I shot this afternoon were .314 and .186. Both 3 shot groups at 100 yds. I think I shall enjoy this gun.

BTW: The best group that I have managed to shoot with my Jackson Squirrel Rifle in .17 Mach II is .320; a five shot group at 50 yds. Apparently those guys at Cooper are onto something.

Glad you're having good luck with your Cooper.

A friend of mine had one in .25/06. We were getting groups with bad stringing, perhaps 2.5-4.0" at 100yds even after sending it back to Cooper.

Both the groups that Cooper shot were one-hole.

He finally had a top rate gunsmith blue-print (faced down the barrel, and reciever, recut the chamber and crown) and pillar-bed the action.
THEN, it started shooting 1/2" OR better groups at 100yds. I spoke with Dan Cooper about the rifle and the groups that it shot. Dan acknowledged that his range at the plant is only 45yds!!!

I've heard of others that had "teething" pains with their Coopers getting them to "shoot".

I noticed that you are in VA. The gunsmith that did the work on the friends Cooper was David Sams, formerly of the Army AMU at Ft. Benning. He's now located in Cartersville, VA. He's a superb gunsmith if you ever need any work done. His speciality is the match conversions on Beretta M92's.
