I have recently been considering a wheel gun for CCW. However I am seriously torn between either a Smith & Wesson Airweight 638 Bodyguard or a Ruger 357 3" SP101.

I guess the things to consider are that I am short for my weight (fat) and I carry IWB at about the 4 o'clock position. The weight of the 638 and the concealed hamer wit the single action option appeals to me but the 3" barrel and the potency of the Ruger are also very attractive to me.

Any input, especially from those that actually own either of these weapons would be apprecaited.

Thanks in advance.

Tim,
Welcome to this forum...

As you know both revolvers are very different. The Ruger weighs 25 oz and the M638 weighs only 15 oz. I carry a M638 and it's very comfortable to carry all day IWB or even in your front pocket. The Ruger will carry fine on your belt but now too well in your pocket since it weighs more.

I'm very happy with my M638 and the ability to fire SA is a help when I test different ammo loads I've reloaded.

638/ Sp101

TimM: Sir; you have picked two good units. Each has plus's and minuses. I carry each. 638 for total hide. [walking around; spring and summer.] sp any other time. Wouldn't trade one for the other.

If you're carrying in a pocket or somewhere that the weight difference matters a lot, then the Airweight Jframe makes lots of sense. It's what I carry most of the time. If you're carrying on the belt, even IWB, the weight doesn't matter nearly as much and you should be able to get away with carrying the heavier, more shootable gun. When I carry a short barreled revolver on my belt, it's my Colt DS. If I had an SP101, I would probably carry it that way. Sometimes I'll just shove the 642 in the belt, but not usually.

I have a 638 and carry it in my pocket all day every day and love it. I picked it up a few weeks ago and love it. I had to work out a kink(short firing pin) but its great now.

I too own them both and I will not part with either one.

They each have their own unique role.

The 638 is primarily a pocket gun.

It tips 17.9 ounces on my otherwise un-used diet scale when stoked with .38Spl +p's.

The 3" SP101 is my belt or Thunderwear gun. It's stoked with .357 fodder and it weighs considerably more.

I find it easier to hold a tighter group with the SP101 and follow up is quicker due to the added weight.

But when I just want to toss on a pair of cargo shorts and go to the store, the convienence of a pocket holstered 638 is hard to beat.
