I've recently equipped my 642 with Crimson Trace LG-305 grips. have not been able to shoot with it yet. At what distance do most of you fine-tune yours (the standard 7 yds./21 ft. rule?), and any other tips concerning CT grips?
Thanks!

Man o' man, I need to get my 642 shipped out here to my new location
so I can make a gun, knife, flashlight pic just like JT's.

(Very long story about why I haven't yet;
not worth the character strokes.)

Shucks, I might even include my droid in the image.

And yes, I like my new location much better;
even if it may be temporary, I won't go back.

Resto Guy

You may want to check out the Crimson Trace Website for tips and FAQs.

IIRC they will send free cleaning wipe tips. They also discuss fine tuning to your likes.

Mine were good from the factory plus or minus an inch or so and since I didn't have a means to lock the revolver to a solid bench to take my hand shake out.... that is accurate enough for me or at least the best I could do.

Main Tip: Cover the lens opening to keep any cleaning fluids from getting on the lens and diffusing the light.

The Fenix L1T, my first good LED light is retired from EDC and in the console of my wife's car. It has been replaced with higher output models in the 150 plus lumen range.

I would recommend he add an ankle strapped 642 to the gear lineup as a last ditch revolver, 4 rounds for the undead and the last one .....
If you like the genre, check out the sample chapter and likely you too will be hooked.

Just dropping in. I am a to this forum and a new owner of a 642-2. I payed $365.00 pending the $50.00 mail in rebate. I have not shot it yet but it feels great in my hand. Not sure when I will get the chance to shoot but at least it sits safe in my home. I can see why it is loved by you all. I have wanted a 642 for a year now and since there was a rebate on them I picked one up.

ph21

Welcome to the board. Good price and the rebate was a good thing.
Of course we want a range report, and photos when you are ready.

Glockman thanks for the Club update. That is outstanding work and didn't fiVe appoint you Club Scribe??

pH21 is pretty alkaline; way off the scale.
(Never mind; it's a science geek joke.)
Welcome in.

Club scribe. Hmm. Can't remember.
I think I was once appointed club statistician,
but fell down on the job. G'man stepped up.
He's got the hat now.

How does one join the 642 club?

I have a 640 that goes with me everywhere (except work - problem being that I would probably wear it out or only having 5 shots, I'd just spin in a circle!). I have been looking at the 642 just for the less weight factor. Either one is an excellent pistol.

There sure are a lot of neat revolvers here. And everyone has a X42! ;)

Here is mine, with it's heavier cousin a 4" M21 (.44 Special). The little guy disappears in pockets & on ankles. Even fits in the bathrobe pocket! The M21 gets jealous because it only fits in hip holsters, but the 642 tries to be humble. ;)

Both of these are sweet Specials, and the J is always there.

will join the 642 club soon

Put a deposit down on a nib 642 this week. Its going to be my Christmas present to myself. I'd like to know if there are any accessories I need to be looking for. This will be a DC gun and I travel all over the southeast. I've found information about painting the sights with night glow paint. Has anyone here ever done this? I have a Glock 22 and a .380 cant remember the make. Any information about accessories I need to consider would be appreciated.

BamaUmp

Welcome and when it comes to accessories...

Holster ie. Mika round or square cut, DeSantis Nemesis (not Superfly).
Bianchi speedstrips, and or speed loader.
Some .38 plus P, SGFSB, BB, DPS or equivalent.
jt would recommend a 442 and Smart Carry.

All these items have been covered extensively in the thread I and II.

Welcome also to the big bad dog dad and poohgyrr and Black Sky.

Hey there .308. Glad to see you around.

BamaUmp,

DAdams pretty much covered it. I prefer the round cut Mika pocket holster myself. For cleaning, I like to use a .40-.45 brass brush on the chambers.

There sure are a lot of neat revolvers here. And everyone has a X42!

Here's my neat combo. A S&W 642-2 and a Model 28-2 (.357 Mag). The 642 is my pocket protector, while the 28 gets carried in a Lobo Gunleather IWB holster from time to time. The 642 is certainly easier to carry, but I shoot the 28 better than any handgun I own.

Here's my 28 and 642, aka Fat Man and Little Boy.

BamaUmp - I decided to paint the front sight a few months ago. After reading many of the same posts you would find, I decided to not use day-glo paints. I went for Testors orange acrylic over a couple coats of white. I painted the serrated portion of the sight with white and let it sit for a couple days. I then painted the upper half with this bright orange (maybe their "international orange", very bright color anyway) and then let it sit for a couple more days to dry really well. How does it work? The orange is very visible in normal light but I don't think it's an improvement in low light. In 20/20 hind sight, I think just the white Testor's acrylic would be the way to go, and is my recommendation to others. While not as good as tritium, the bright white helps some in low light.

Hey fellow clubbers...

Curious to see if any of you have a recommended practice routine for your 642? I have been working up a regular practice routine for myself so that I can make the most out of my range time instead of just plinking around.

Scotishclaymore

What is a Scottishclaymore?

You may wish to try the Old Fuff Drill.....named after Old Fuff.

5x5x5. five rounds, from five yards, in five seconds.
All bulls would be outstanding. Shoot for points and a timer would be good.

At one of the ranges I go to once qualified by the range master, drawing from a holstered state is permitted. Maybe add a second or two to clear leather, nylon, or Kydex.

Try using a deck of cards. Five shot poker anyone?

Proud new member of the 642 Club!! Traded a Ruger LCR for a 2.5 inch 642 a couple of weeks ago. Had Smith snubbies in the past, but when I saw that full-lugged 642 in the case calling my name, I couldn't resist. Was having a little buyers remorse about getting one with the 2.5 in barrel, but that soon passed after shooting it. Just a tad bit longer as far as pocket carry, but not enough to matter. Now I just need to shoot it more and smooth out the action. Fits fine in a DeSantis pocket holster.

RetDep, welcome in.

Oh, cool! Finally a 2.5" in the club.

(ABE: Oh, wait, is that a 2.5" in BlackSky's post at the top off this page?)

Pics are much desired when you get a chance,
and I'm very curious about things like sight radius, handling, etc.

Welcomes also to Big Dog Dad and BamaUmp
(and DLoy if we didn't properly welcome you.)

A fine 16th century sword.

From Scottish Gaelic claidheamh mòr, "great sword".

Here are a few pics.

Almost bought one a few years ago from Angus Trim,
but decided it would take more time than I had to be proficient with it.

Besides, I'm more of a revolver and rifle guy.

Still got my knives, though. ;)

Losing weight is difficult. Last Sunday, at church, I kept tugging on my britches - they were drooping. I kept thinking, it's just a 642... why is it tugging on my pants so much? My belt was at it's tightest... I must have dropped a few more pounds! I went to the men's room - into a stall - gads, my 642 had put on weight! The little booger had 200gr bullets... and they were .44 Specials, not .38's... and that Ti cylinder - and Ti atom on the side... it was my 296! Rats - so much for my losing weight... and my 642 had gained weight!

IMG_0596.jpg

I haven't carried the 296 in a while - it does resemble the 642 when they are in their Mika pocket holsters. When I got home, the 642 was in the 296's usual storage site. They really do look pretty similar in their Mika holsters:

IMG_0206.jpg

So, instead of dropping a few pounds, I had a 'senior moment' - and grabbed the wrong pocket protector. %$#@*&!!

Stainz

PS The 200gr Speer Gold Dots, loaded by GA Arms, are 'fun' in that 296... more slap than the 158gr LHPSWC Remington R38S12's in a 642 by a bit, too. The knife is a Buck Custom Shop 110 in orange Fiji wood, nickel silver bolsters, and BG-42 blade - bargain!

Finally a 2.5" in the club...

I bought a new 637 with a 2.5" bbl last week, and I really like it. The shop I bought it from was accommodating enough to swap the factory CT405 grips that came on it for factory CT305 grips off of a new 642 they had in stock, because I like the feel of the 305 better. (I have aftermarket CT105 grips on my old 442). I'm carrying 158gr LHPSWC Remington R38S12 in both, and I love my 442, but the 637 is quickly becoming one of my favorite revolvers ever. The bbl sticks out about 3/8" out the open nose of a Desantis Nemesis, and it pocket-carries really well given deep enough pockets (Carrharts in my case).
