OK,
So I'm looking at a shop that has a 686-1 and a "Newer" 686 (not so new that it has the keylock though). Both are in the same condition. Which one is "better"? Does the hammer mounted vs frame mounted firing pin make a difference? Which would you go for?

I used my early version for compo's ....... many 1,000's of rounds ... loved that gun. Some guys in the club were getting newer ones (this is some time ago) and i liked the idea of the new foresight .. but re hammer and firing pin etc .. no probs either way IMO. All my Smiths back then were ''attached'' firing pin ... no probs.

If the older one is good .... and price is acceptable then I doubt you will be other than delighted. I fancy the ''internals'' maybe are a tad superior .... tho can't prove it!

Modified?

Make sure the 686-1 that you are considering has been modified/upgraded at the factory and bears the "M" stamped in the crane area.

There were problems with the -1's and full house loads that were addressed in a recall. You don't want a defense gun locking up.

If the "M" is there, you can't miss it....if it's not Smith will do the mod for free - but you'll have to send it in.
