7.35 Carcano value?

An aquaintance has a rifle he said he's thinking about selling. It is an Italian Carcano in 7.35mm. I was somewhat interested in it, just because it's different. Ammo availablility doesn't bother me, as I would just get some Lee dies, hornady 6.5 brass, and a Lee bullet sizer in .299".

The problem is that Bubba got to the stock sometime in the past. Chopped stock, missing forearm, recoil pad. The bore looks OK, I've seen worse but it's really not that great either. It does have the SA mark that I read somewhere means it was in Finland at some point. I remember seeing 1895 stamped on it also, not sure what that means because I know the 7.35 was WWII only.
He said he would like to get $100 for it but I'm inclined to think that's rather high considering condition. I really can't afford another rifle considering my recent CMP purchase. Mostly curious I guess.

Any Carcano fans out there? Is this a fair deal? Is replacement wood available?

I'd say in the present condition, $50-$60 would be more realistic. It will cost you a fair ammount to rebuild it. You'd be better off trying to find an unbubba'd one on Gunsamerica or Gunbroker. But then, I'm no expert

ETA: If you could get it for $75 or less, I would.

ammo is nearly impossible to find for your model
i might get one in 6.5 carcano as inheritance....and wouldnt consider getting one unless it was for free for $100 you can get a nagant and ammo is very cheap for that....also alot of carcanos are a crap shoot add on that its sporterized to say the least and you should look elsewhere
im not dissing the rifle but id would look elsewhere in the world of mil surp there are plenty of equally priced better options....although it was the jfk rifle if that means anything to you but keeping in mind that most mil surps designs have killed thousands if not millions, president or not

$100 is WAY too much for a Bubba job. I picked up a damn near pristine Finn for $135. BTW, Cabellas carries 7.35.

There seems to be lots of parts around, but no stocks. Gunparts has parts. No stocks. A 7.35 cal barrel is $18.80. Not that they have any. There was a guy back in Feb. 07, on Gunboards, who wants $250 for an M38 stock.

For a chopped stock carcano, fifty or less, sorry. And a box of ammo's worth more than the rifle.

Even a good Carcano is only a hundred or hundred-fifty dollar rifle.

Thanks all. You have convinced me, though I didn't need much convincing. I had pretty much lost interest when I first looked at it.

I already have a decent collection of inexpensive WWII rifles (Mosin-Nagant, Enfield, Mauser, Arisaka, as well as a Garand and a carbine) but nothing Italian. I was somewhat interested until I saw what Bubba had done to it. Too bad.

I have a decent looking sporterized 7.35 that my FiL used to hunt with and gave me. Finally bought some rounds for it, still haven't shot it yet. Neat old gun.
