I hunt black tail deer here in CA, but recently have been getting a bear tag too. Our deer are small, a monster for our area field dresses at 140 pounds, more likely to be about 100-120 pounds though. Last year I saw a black bear that was, as best I can figure, about 400 pounds. Even if I was exagerating, which I don't think I am, lets say 350 pounds. I personally saw a 450 pound bear that was killed in our area though.
So I want to load a bullet that will expand enough on our tiny deer, yet penetrate enough for a 400 pound black bear. The gun I will be using is most likely going to be a Remington 700 in 7MM Rem Mag. I have used Nosler (partition) bullets in my other deer rifle and was extremely impressed with accuracy (the first load I worked up went under an inch at 100 yards with no tweeking - good luck I know) so I am kinda leaning towards Nosler. I was thinking the 160 grain Accubond might be a good choice? the polymer tip for expansion, the bonded core for weight retention.
Any thoughts? Range will be close, I doubt I will be shooting more than 150 yards, so the bullets will still be traveling pretty quick.
