Has anyone ever heard of a 75 grain wadcutter for the 38 spl? The local guy I buy cast bullets off of just got a mold in for them. He said its the same as the Lyman 358101 mold. Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with it and what their loads were.

Thanks,
Matt

Not familiar with a 75 gr 38 special bullet and would wonder if a wad cutter bullet that light would stabilize in a standard 38/257 barrel. I suspect it might start tumbling after so many yards. Sounds like it might be some time of indoor gallery bullet for shooting at 15 feet or less. JMHO!

I have never shot any, but I have seen some at least similar in G&A. They loaded two in .38 cases and three in .357 cases, or you could just shoot them one at a time. Should be super low recoil.

The only instance I've seen much use with ultra short wadcutters was for a close range stage of certain target matches, where at 7yrds from the target, sighting is not allowed (pistol fired at waist level and shots were moved closer to the target centre by adjusting accordingly without viewing the sights and muzzle flip is undesirable).
In otherwords 'putt-putt loads' as that's the sound they make when fired (the wadcutter is seated way down in the case on top of a tiny powder charge).

They properbly make for a reasonable light target load at 25yds, if dosed with more powder, rifling should be spinning them fast enough(for such a short bullet).

Also I've 'heard' of them loaded as SD rounds, loaded more than one per cartridge, giving that 'double tap' effect from each round, so if you do several rapid shoots, it's like hitting your threat with 000 buckshot.

Thanks for the quick replies. sounds like an interesting load. I ordered some 148 gr. wadcutters from him and his is going to give me 50 or so of the little guys to try out. Anyone know where I can get some loading data from?

Thanks,
Matt

Lyman #49 and Hodgdon both list data for a 90 grain lead RN.

It should be suitable for use with the 75 grain WC bullets too.

If you want to try loading two of them at once, use data for the 148 grain WC as they should have about the same bearing surface.

That was my plan, just good to hear it from reliable sources. On my way home I had another idea. I have heard of people making snake loads with a 357 case with a light powder charge under a nitro card with some #9 shot topped with a round ball smushed into a case. Why couldn't a guy use one of these little 75 grainers on top? Any words of warning or ideas?

Thanks,
Matt

Why not. Powder. Cardboard wad. Shot. Top it with a 75 Gr WC. Start low and work up. But what for. Either shot or a couple of wadcutters.
