870 Express or Police model?

I'm planning on getting an 870 in the near future and am trying to decide on either an Express or Police model. I'm going with a stock gun for now and only adding what I determine I need after considerable use. With that in mind, I've heard that the Police models are given some special attention from Remington. Would this justify the additional cost (approx. $100) or is the Express just as good? The purpose would be HD, training, and general enjoyment.

I have an express model that is about 15 years old. It fulfills the duties you asked about and has had no problems. I don't think the extra money is worth it, it should be just as durable. However, I think the new 870s have a bump at the end of the magazine tube, making it difficult to use an extension. Someone correct me if my info is wrong.
My police 870? It says wingmaster on the side.

The bump on the 870 can be problematic, but if I remember correctly there is a thread or two archived over at TheFiringLine that details how to install the extension in spite of the bump. You may want to do a quick search over there.

In your case, I'd probably opt for the Express.
There are differences between the Police models and the Express guns, but they probably won't make that much difference to you.

Primarily, the Police models have a better, parkerized finish, a slightly smoother finish internally, an aluminum trigger guard, and don't have the silly lockable safety.

The Police model is the top of the line in Remington Defense guns, and if you can swing the extra bucks, you will be well armed and well satisified.
