Does anybody know when they started to rollmark the "POLICE" on the sides of the 870P models? I came across an 870, and ran the serial # through Remington. It is a 1991 police model, but it is marked as "870 Magnum"

Cannot tell you when they started using the "Police" rollmark, I have what I believe is a 1992 with it though. The first "870 Magnums" were considered police unless "express" was added to the rollmark. The older 2 3/4 Wingmasters" could also be a police gun, I have two that are identified by the serial number.

Some Wingmasters were police guns. I rode with my local police quite often back in the late 1970s. There were several cars that had Wingmasters in the trunk rack. Oh how I would love to get my hands on one of those particular guns today.

First, remember that Remington has changed the markings on the 870 series MANY times over the years., including the Police models.

They first used the "Police" stamp around the same time the Express was introduced in 1987.
I had Police marked gun that I ordered from a distributor right about that time.

That's interesting. Does anybody know what price range a used 870 Police should go for nowadays?

The one I found in question is priced at $279. Not completely beat to hell, but you can see evidence of car rack mounting, and the parkerizing is really thinned out on the top of the receiver.

I have been seeing Remington 870 Police shotguns going in the $299 range...Wingmasters, Police Magnums, 870P...usually carried much and shot much less...if you trust the seller and the one you look at isn't too beat up, that's not bad (at least around Chicagoland...)

Should have a couple nicer parts than a garden variety 870 Express and the action is probably polished up nicely from being racked so much...

For $279, I would not hesitate to buy a parkerized 870 Police. That is less money than most people are asking for an 870 Express.

The parkerized finish is my favorite for an 870 HD gun, and the 870 probably has over 90% of its life left.
