So like many on this board, I've been on the hunt for a 9mm CCW. I thought I had found it when I purchased a Taurus 24/7 Compact almost a year ago.

There were a lot of things I really liked about this pistol. First the price - 350. Hard to beat. A great size for CCW, 2 different size mags, a 17 round and a 12 round. Not too thick. The Grip was excellent - felt great in the hand, and I really liked the trigger - nice and smooth throughout the pull, way better than I expected. I personally liked the external safety. Never had a failure of any sort with 650+ rounds through it.
What I didn't like: the way the barrel fit into the slide. It sure seemed loose fitting. The Heine sights - didn't like them. The kicker - for me the accuracy was off. It shot way too far to the low and right than I was comfortable with. My wife too. And we're not talking at 25 yards here, 3-7 yards. Tried adjusting the sights, practiced with it because this was my first compact and thought it might be user error, but in the end I just wasn't comfortable with it, so I sold it.

Went to a gunshow and picked up these guys:

An M&P compact in 9mm, and a Glock 26 (also 9mm for those not familiar with the Glock numbering).

First the M&P - love it. Out of the box I erased the target center at 7 yards. So much more accurate in my hands than the Taurus. A little thicker than the Taurus but well balanced. The trigger is exactly like my full size M&P .40 - nice with a clean draw to take up the slack with a definite stopping point, and a smooth follow-through snap to fire off the round. Recoil was very manageable. Really like the grip, especially with the mag with the pinky rest in, but without it wasn't a big deal. Did not have a single failure after about 250 rounds mixed loads. To me, the M&P feels better in my hands than the XD which is why I went with it. Definitely would recommend this gun.
After several rounds I handed it to my wife. Her first 5 shots were straight down the center - she couldn't hit with the Taurus either.

The Glock belongs to my wife, but I got to play with it too :D. Thicker grip but not bad IMO - well balanced. Hers has night sights and they were very nice. The trigger is typical Glock, not unlike the M&P where you can consistently draw up the slack before your follow through, but it flelt lighter or plastic-ier (for lack of a better word) But I don't mind the Glock trigger. It's easy enought to get used to. Did have 2 FTFs with some winchester winclean 115 gr I had left over from an order. I remember her Glock 19 didn't like that stuff either in the first 300-400 rounds, but once broken in ran fine with it. Not sure if the winclean is loaded a tad lighter than regular WWB. No other problems with Blazer Brass, S&B, or speer gold dots. But my wife shot great with it, no different than with her G19. Very consistent groups at 7-10 yards.

Overall I like both of these better than the Taurus because of the accuracy factor and would recommend both for a CCW. I like the M&P best, but the Glock was not far behind. My wife likes her Glocks but shot well with the M&P. Both are easy to strip and maintain, and the only other difference was the Glock lacked a rail. I really wanted to like the Taurus because everything else about it was workable. If it were as accurate as the other two I would have been completely happy. Of all 3 the grip on the Taurus was the best IMO. But in the end you carry to use it, and if a lack of accuracy might prevent you from using your weapon when you need it, then it just cannot work.

There are a lot of great choices out there. I know a lot of people love the XD which personally didn't feel right in my hands - felt clunkier than the Glock IMO, and there's the PPS which I chose not to get because of what seems to be some reliability issues (again, a comfort thing...) So for what it's worth, thanks for reading.

Thanks for mentioning in my thread that you already had this thread.....I like the looks of that M&P..it appears smaller than the 26....which I do like...but....what about sharing mags between my 19 and my 26....whats your opinion...does that sway the decision more towards the 26?

Sure that is a plus of going with the 26, however in the long run, how often are you going to do it? The M&P comes with 12 round mags and until december you can mail in to get 2 more. So you can have your 19 and an M&P with 4 12 round mags and have a little variety in your shooting.

But, my wife could care less about variety - she likes glocks which is why we got her the 26. So if you really would rather stick with the Glock because that is what you're most comfortable with, than the 26 will be great, and you'll be able to share the mags.

How about the finish on the M&P? Its melonite (which is also what the new gen XD's have).....but how touchy is it.....will it rust over time quicker than normal? Just wondering b/c I have come across folks who have said they don't like the finish

That's a bummer about the Taurus. Good choice with the Glock and M&P. What do you think of the disassembly procedure of the M&P? I found the sear disconnect thing a unnecessary and annoying. I also didn't like taking the disassembly pin out of the gun every time, I was afraid I would eventually break it, so I used a nail punch instead. All and all a great gun though.

I agree the sear disconnect is a little much, but now that I've done it several times between my 2 M&Ps it's not a big deal. I've never had to remove the disassembly pin though- I turn it down to it's vertical position, push down the sear disconnect and the slide comes right off.

I don't think it was the accuracy of the gun inherently, but that it just wasn't instinctive for you. Shooting at 3 to 7 yards, you could blow spitwads through a mcdonalds straw and hit the 10 ring every time.

Melonite is basically the same finish as the Glock but it uses a stainless slide instead of a parkerized steel slide. There were some issues with the finish as it was improperly applied on a few guns but overall the M&P will have the same if not more resistance to rust than any other stainless gun. I've carried mine IWB for about two years now. I've never seen a spot of rust on it.

Actually, the M&Pc is slightly larger than the G26 - it fits between the G26 and G19, though the M&Pc is much closer is size to the G26. (Sorry I don't have the numbers handy, but if you look at the dimensions you'll see what I'm talking about).

Ericyp that was exactly my thought - At this close range this shouldn't be an issue, but the only way I could hit the center, even at 3 yards! was to aim very high and left, and to me that was unacceptable. So to hit a guy in his chest I need to find his ear and then slide over to his shoulder!

Again, I thought this was my first try at a compact so I kept working at it and practicing with it because I figured the gun could not be this inaccurate, it had to be me, and while it improved some, it still wasn't right. Adjusting the sights helped very little too - the shots just did not go where I aimed it no matter how I lined up the straight eights, and in a carry gun that's pretty important. My wife who is a reasonable shot, first time she picked it up, asked her to aim dead center and let's see where the shots go, didn't even hit the paper at 7 yards, yet the first time she picks up the M&P, and the G26 for that matter, at the same distance, straight down the middle.

Now it could have been just a defective model. I've heard that Taurus doesn't have the best quality control in the industry because I know a lot of people really like the 24/7 series. The loose fitting barrel could have been the reason behind the innaccuracy, but it sure doesn't make me want to try another Taurus even though I really liked that gun in every other way - just too many good, reliable options out there to throw money at the possibility of getting a good piece, just my experience.
