A 1911 for CCW?

The issue of concealing a 5" 1911 as opposed to a 4" 1911 is moot. It is the length of the grip frame that is hardest to conceal, not the barrel length.

In other words, it is no harder to conceal a Government (5") sized pistol than it is to conceal a Commander (4") sized pistol; the frame size is the same. Bobtail the frame and it is somewhat easier to conceal.

A CCO pistol on the other hand, i.e. Officer's sized frame and Commander length barrel is a little easier to conceal as the frame is shorter.

I don't know of any new Commanders, CCO's, or Officer's pistol for $500.

Roger that.
It's the 1911's butt that's hard to conceal in any sort of IWB holster, though it bears mentioning that overall fore-aft length is an issue in "horizontal" shoulder rig carry. (It's also obvious that the length is a concealment issue for an OWB holster.)

AFAIC, the main reasons for carrying a Commander-length 1911 is actually to get two things: shorter butt (meaning CCO pattern) and lighter weight (meaning aluminum alloy frame). If you're not going to get a shorter butt and a lighter weight gun, why not just stick with the full size gun and get a 5" barrel? I believe Springfield Armory offered a full size 1911 with an alloy frame for awhile, but I've never seen a commercially produced 5" gun with a cut-down butt or CCO-pattern frame.

You can fine a good used Colt Commander or even a Defender for around 600. I have a New Agent. buy gun now and put on Layaway . Then you will have what you want when findly comes to CC

Springfields are not "MA legal" because the attorney general in MA has some problem with their pistols.

You also can't buy SIG DAK models here, either. It has something to do with the trigger pull weight.

In my humble opinion, you can't beat a commander sized 1911 for ultimate concealment and knockdown power. Here are two of my Bobtails (one Ed Brown Kobra Carry and one Kimber Pro SLE) at vast differences in cost, that both provide wonderful service. Is the Brown worth the extra money? By the time I bobtailed the Kimber, sent it off to Chuck Rogers for his wonderful "golfball" treatment on the front/rear grip, and replaced the MIM parts for Ed Brown's Hardcore parts, the two guns' prices weren't that far apart! I do love them both, and am in the process of having Chuck bobtail a heavily customized Colt S-70 repro just because I love the bobtail!
