One big kudo to H&K customer service! Just wanted to share the joy. There have been a number of people saying bad things about various customer service organizations lately, so I thought I'd say something positive.

Back in 1997 I bought an H&K USP Compact in 9mm. Great gun. It has never failed. Not one single time. In all that time though, I found myself wishing it didn't have the standard compact version's bobbed hammer. I wanted a spur hammer so I could raise/lower the hammer with my thumb. No, I don't want to get into the "why" of it all... it's just what I wanted.

I called H&K to buy a hammer to put in myself. They would have sold me one, but they didn't know which hammer I needed.... right around that time they changed the hammer and a couple of other parts. I wouldn't know what I needed until I got the existing hammer out. I bit the bullet and asked them what they'd charge me to do the replacement. The quote they gave me was reasonable - an estimate of $135, depending on what needed to be done.

That was Tuesday of LAST WEEK. They gave me an R.A. number and I sent it to them on Wednesday of LAST WEEK. (overnight express, UPS = $91 dollars... another story altogether and very irritating). I'm located in WA state and H&K is in GA.

On Friday of last week, the Gunsmith at H&K called me personally to say the gun is done. And they replaced springs, AND other hard parts, AND replaced the hammer. AND... they replaced the sights just because the newer ones have brighter white dots than the older ones. :)

I did not complain. When I asked what the cost was... $106, INCLUDING shipping back to me. All updates were done for free, including the sights. The only thing I was charged for was the hammer that I requested. I couldn't get the credit card out fast enough. The gun was delivered to me today, precisely one week after calling them for information, and less than a week after I sent it to them. That is stunning customer service.

Should there be a next time that I'm looking for a new handgun, I will not balk at the price of an H&K. Yep, it's expensive. Then I think about the fact that mine has never failed even one time, the customer service is excellent and reasonable, and I realize that once in a while you get what you pay for.

If anyone is curious, here's a compact with a standard spur hammer. Precisely what the doctor ordered... for me.

Awesome!!

I have heard nothing but great praise for HK customer service for quite a while now.

Beautiful USP compact.

I bought my first HKs a couple months ago and am extremely pleased with them and how well I can shoot them - a HK45 and P30LS. I have been thinking of maybe a USP Compact or P2000 in 9MM also.

Well done! HK supports their products.

It wounds me though every time I hear an exorbitant shipping fee though. Don't folks have a nearby FFL that will ship the pistol for them? Reckon I'm lucky that way?

On reflection I may have been able to go to someone locally with an FFL to get it shipped cheaper. I'll do that if there's a next time. I've gotten so I really hate UPS and/or FedEx though - it was $91 for me, but it cost H&K less than $25 to send it back. Pure robbery.

Agreed. They take advantage of gun owner's

I recently sold my Hk USP .45 Compact, but I installed a spurred hammer on it as well. I just ordered one from CDNN for $9.99. I was glad to find one for so cheaply. It was a factory Hk part as well.

Here are a couple pics of the finished product. I was able to install it in about 15 minutes.

My Daughter has an HK45 and doing a parts check...(I hoard a few parts for the guns.) and discovered what appeared to be a mix-up in the O-rings they usually include. Anyway, I called H&K and three showed up in the mail within a few days. No charge. The O-rings sent were correct and I now am not sure the others were originally included with the gun so I don't want to put stink on H&K that might belong on me.

IdahoHk416 - yeah, I think we have the same hammer. You got a good deal. Other places charge up to something like $60 for the hammer. H&K charged me $24 - quite fair from a manufacturer I think. I would have done the same thing had they been able to tell me I didn't need additional changes to make it fit. Good job putting it in! I think every pistol needs a hammer with a spur! :)

You bring up a great point regarding factory HK parts, ordered directly from HK.

I recently ordered a bunch of "stuff" for the HK45 I bought used. HK offers their parts are significantly less than all other on-line retailers

for instance, a match mainspring was $16 from a retailer, $2 and change from HK

A trigger shoe was $35 from a retailer, $7 something from HK

It goes on and on...

OP, did they change the trigger variant or just add a bobbed hammer? Its my understanding that the bobbed hammer is used only the DAO and LEM variants.

I recently converted my P2000sk to LEM. I ordered the parts from HK, along with a few different springs so that I have the choice of going V4, and a HK45 mag release. I was told that not all my ordered parts were in stock so would have to wait a month or so. The rep said that he would check with their smiths to see if he could finish my order early. I was pleasantly surprised when my order arrived three days later.

JustinJ - the gun was originally DA/SA and it still is. The variant has not changed at all, it just has a spurred hammer now, and the de-cocker works exactly as it did before.

I have a different understanding of how the original gun was offered - I thought every Compact came with a bobbed hammer. I admit that I never thought about it though.

Nice gun and nice story! Good to hear since I'm a week old HK owner.

Do they require registration of a new gun for warranty work? Not that I'll need it, but I didn't really see any warranty info in my box.

Two comments for 460Kodiak:

1. HKs have a lifetime warranty for the original purchaser. They didn't ask me for any documentation whatsoever and I don't believe I registered it with them when I bought it in 1997.

2. How were you able to legally buy a handgun if you're only a week old?

:)

Ha! A better question is how was I able to type if I'm only a week old!

Good to know on the warranty. I'll just keep my reciept in a safe place then, as usual.
