After picking up a minty Stevens 200 in 7mm-08 the other day, I started researching loads. There were many reports of these rifles having the slower 1:11.5" twist barrels and short throats, so I checked mine and sure enough both are true in my gun (not sure the age of the rifle, but the new Savage website shows 1:9.5" twist in the newer 7mm-08's).

I was a suspicious when the 139 grain SST's shot great but some 160-grain Accubonds were just awful. A look at the stability calculator indicates why that's the case. The 160's are just too unstable in that twist. Since this is going to be my primary deer rifle, I wasn't too concerned as I am more than happy to lob 120 and 139/140 grainers at our Southern whitetails.

If you have one of these older Savage/Stevens in 7mm-08, you owe it to yourself to try the 139 grain Hornady SST Interlocks. They are superb. This is a group from yesterday's range trip and it's a very common group for this rifle and that particular load - [ 139 grain SST over 47 grains of H4350 (compressed), seated at the cannelure (2.80") for 2760 fps.]. Interesting thing about these SST's is that they are the only bullet I've ever used that gives me greater velocities than the published load data.

Another lighter recoil load I've found uses the 120 grain Sierra Pro Hunter bullet over 39 grains of H4895. That gives me 2840 fps. out of my 22" barrel. Because of the shape of the 120 grain Sierra, I can't even load it to book lengths in my rifle, due to the short throat. 2.77" meets the lands.

Both of these groups shoot under an inch and follow the same POI to 200 yards. At 300, the SST's impact a few inches higher than the Sierra's, but they are still very close.

I will eventually try the 120 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip / RL 15 combination that everyone raves about in the 7mm-08, but for now I am pretty pleased using my "budget" bullets.

Good Afternoon,

I have a Savage 7mm-08 with a 1 in 11.5 barrel as well.

I have been able to develop accurate loads with:
120 gr Sierra Pro Hunter with BL(C)-2
139 gr Hornady IL with BL(C)-2
140 gr Sierra Pro Hunter with IMR4064
145 gr Speer Hot Core with 2000-MR.

I have not had success with bullets weighing 150 gr and above.

I also have another rifle in 7mm-08 with a faster twist and have had great luck with the Hornady 154 gr. Inter-Lock bullet with both H414 and Ramshot's Hunter powder.

My definition of an accurate load is 3 shots from the bench at 100 yards at a paper target and a quarter (coin) touches all bullet holes (O.k., I'm not gonna' stretch the truth on Christmas. Sometimes the quarter has to slide just a little bit but it is still a quick check to see if the load is 1 MOA.).

Merry Christmas All!

Dan

Thanks for that Dan. I look forward to getting a 2nd 7mm-08 in a faster twist, just for the heavier bullets. ;)

Bob, I am not sure of the load of RL-15 as I've not yet tried it. However, if you do a search for reloading data, it comes up over and over again in people's comments. I'm so happy with the 139 SST's both on paper and on game, that I'm not sure I'll ever spend the extra $ for the Noslers. I just don't really see a reason.

Both me and my son shot my Stevens 7mm-08 at the range today, and he agreed it is a smooth, easy shooter. I think he's taking it deer hunting tomorrow. LOL

Re:120gr Nosler BT w/RL15

Nosler #8 suggests 40.0gr RL15 start load, and most accurate for 2,848fps from 26"bbl.
max 44.0gr for 3,118fps.

I've heard that 41-42.5 is the sweet spot.
You'll just have to try and see what your rifle prefers.

I've found 120gr Nosler BT's to be too soft for deer from 7mm08. I use them in my 7-30Waters.
For 7mm08, I stick with 139-154gr PtSpt Interloks. My rifle prefers 150's over 46.0gr H4350 or RL17. But 139gr -140 over either at 48.0gr is also excellent. Will get 3,000fps from my 20"bbl Remington. 150's are more accurate and close to 139's for velocity. Energy favors the 150's at 100yds and beyond. As do trajectory berond 300yds.
I bought 500 blem 139BTSPT Interloks, so I'll be shooting them for many years.

OK, I have 2 good loads for 120 gr. Nosler solid base bullets. One is with 2460 and the other is 40 gr. of RL 15. These are for my granddaughter's Model 7 in 7-08.
I only have 57 of the solid base bullets left and didn't want to waste them on load development. I don't care for the ballistic tips' performance on deer so I use the solid base bullets for hunting only.

If the Magic load is the same as mine, I can quit right now. :D

Goose, I'm glad to know RL17 is close to H4350 as it's often much more available. Will have to try it next to experiment, but for now at least, 139 grain SST's over 47 grains of H4350 is magic in my gun.

Shooting Nosler 120BTs, my 24" 1:9.25 twist Remington with a SUPER-LONG throat loves 45.8gr of RL-15, and shoots equally as well with 47.0 of IMR-4350 using Remington brass and CCI-200s.
