Hi everyone. This seemed the most appropiate place to put this thread.

I have a Mosin Nagant m44 and Im about to purchase a m38 if all goes well this weekend with some surplus 7.62x54R ammo. On my m44 with it being a rearsenaled gun, the bore is in excellent shape. I have not thrown any surplus ammo through it, just the modern day commercial Russian made Brown Bear stuff. Its non corrosive or so they say, but Im pretty anal about cleaning up my guns right after a range trip so if it is no harm done.

I'm planning to attend the THR gather of our fellow Austin members this weekend. I plan to hit the gunshow early in the morning, track down the fella that has the m38 and the surplus ammo, get that out of the way, then roam the show floor for a few hours, check out all the other stuff I shouldn't be looking at :) and then get some lunch and head out to the shoot. Its supposed to be from 1 to 5 that afternoon.

Here is my concern. Like I stated, Im pretty anal about cleaning up anything I shoot right afterwards. For this shoot, its supposedly going to have several breaks in between firing, for meeting and greeting, swap meeting etc... amongst the other members attending. I have never shot known corrosive ammo before. Whats the maximum suggested timeframe between firing this stuff. If the meet lasts from 1 to 5, and we have a break or 2 in there, should I run some Windex or something down the bore while we wait? Or will it be ok to just go ahead throughout the entire session without any cleaning along the way. My other concern is, I live in San Antonio, so theres at least an hour drive back. Should I plan to somehow clean it out before that drive or will one hour make a big difference? I have no idea on the m38 Im planning to purchase on its bore condition, but from what I was told on the phone it should be to my liking. The m44 of mine is superb, I sure would hate to jack it up with this surplus stuff.

The reason Im going to try this stuff is its cheap, its a meet, so others may want to shoot the gun while we are out there, I want to have plenty of ammo on hand so all can shoot if they wish, and I just need to be prepared if needbe.

One thought I had was what about those premoistened Windex wipes, would that be a good alternative to wipe things down with at the range for a temporary measure until I could get home that night and clean out the guns properly? I may or may not head right back home that night, I have a friend in Austin and if she can make the time, I might be sticking around town for a while that night. All the more reason to be careful with my bores if Im planning to use Corrosive stuff.

Like I said, this will be my first time trying out this surplus stuff, so please bear with me, I do apprecite any advice on the matter.

Cheers

Corrosively primed ammo won't cause instant rust. You can shoot all day with breaks or no breaks and be fine. Clean the rifle when you get home.

Ok, thanks, I didn't think a few hours would do any harm, but if I stick around in Austin later that night, I dunno when I might get home or not, so thats why I wanted to ask. If it looks like Im spending the night then Ill at least try and wipe the bolt down and run a windex soaked patch or 2 through the bore for the night.

cleaning after corrosive primed ammunition

Get a spray bottle of Windex and carry it with you. When you are finished for the day just squirt a goodly amount of Windex down the barrel and let it sit muzzle down for 5 minutes.Spray the bolt head also. This will wash out any hydroscopic salts from the corrosive primers from the bore and also from the bolt head. When you get home, even if it is the next day, clean your rifle normally.Should be good to go.I do this a lot.

I clean my black powder Winchester single shot at the range. It only takes about ten minutes with Windex, then Ballistol. Corrosive primed Communist surplus shouldn't take much longer to do right. I would not leave it wet with Windex, it doesn't take long to dry and oil.

very appreciated, ill just plan to do as much of a cleaning job as possible sat, i have never been to one of these shoots and not sure of what facilites or not will be available, worst case I can throw a blanket or something on the rear trunk lid of the car and do it there, ill just have to see how this works out, as long as I get most of the salts washed away with windex there at the range i think i should be fine

thx again for the great advice
