A few left over from the Coon hunters Festival

I setup at the local Coon hunters Festival last weekend and had some knives left over, here are a few of them..


This one but is forged from 1084 and has a folded handle wrapped in leather then wrapped in 1/16 stainless rope.

The blade is just under 1/4" at it's thickest point with a 6.25" cutting edge and 12.5" overall. Hard to see in the pictures but the spine has a slight swedge as well.

It was forged to shape 95% of the way then cleaned up on the blade flats and polished.

Not sure yet but I may go to a more traditional wrap and sheath to tone it down a bit

This knife is probably more of an art knife but it's more than suited for self defense if you want to use it for that.

It's forged from virgin W1 drill rod that I split down the middle to form the handle. The polished palm swell is pewter that I poured directly into the handle for fitting, then after cleanup is epoxied in place with 100# stainless cable wrap for apearance and added strength.

Blade is a frosted finish & is 3.75" long, OAL is 6.75"

Finally, This knife is from virgin 5/16" thick 5160 and is flat ground stock removal (not forged).

Scales are black paper micarta, lined with brown linen micarta. Thong hole is 5/8" brown linen tube and pins are 1/4" stainless tubes.

This is a very beefy knife but feels great in hand, the balance point is directly under the front pin.

Blade is satin finished and has a penetrator tip.

OAL is 9.75", blade is 4.5"

Nice forging and grinding work.

I agree that the Coon Hunters Festival probably wasn't the place for a steel cable wraped neo-primative forged cable piece. I bet it would sell on the internet though to a younger market! Good looking knife regardless.

Very clever work on the push dagger.

I would have assumed that the flat grind spear point would have had it's balance point well forward. I'm impressed with the work on it.

BTW, is your anvil stand a sand filled portable?

The balance on the big stock removal leaf blade is just to the front side of the front pin, which is essentially on the index finger. The reason it's not more forward is because the grip is the full 5/16" stock with no extra holes to reduce weight. I envisioned this knife as a light chopper but with the shorter blade feel it's better used with a batton and went for a neutral balance. Also, the long handle & knob facilitates sliding back on the grip when you need more swing force.

Still on the fence with the folded handle. It would make a fantastic chopper and I think a good utility wrap would encourage it's ultimate owner to use it more. But who knows, it may end up on the belt of a Klingon re-enactor somewhere!

HSO, I don't really have it setup to be portable but yes, it's sand filled. Actually, it's filled with pavers sand that is wet down with a gallon of used motor oil. The base weighs about 180#.

I've found that a sand base is best for vintage anvils and when the base is not permanantly mounted to the floor. The Trenton I use is about 120 years old and does not sit perfectly square on a flat surface, the sand is very forgiving in that regard.

Well, the funky look of the primitive forged chopper got the best of me so this weekend I gave it a makeover.

I shoot SASS and decided this one will go good on someone's gun belt...

BTK, are you going to the Ohio or Chesapeake show's this year? I may go visit the Ohio show but thinking about a table at Chesapeake..
