I finally got my woods gun. Last week I went to my favorite gun shop and lo and behold in there used gun case was a Ruger Security-Six. I have been wanting a decent sized revolver for carrying in the woods for a while. The problem was that good sized new revolvers can be very expensive, so I have been waiting and waiting for a good used one at a decent price to come along for quite some time. The gun I was using before was my CZ SP-01 which is a fantastic gun, but I was wanting something with a little more umph for the woods. Something that could handle the two-legged and four-legged critters in my area.

So when I saw the price I immediately told the gentleman that I was very interested but still wanted to look around the shop. So he put it to the side and asked me what else I wanted to look at. Now about the price, I have no idea if I got a good price, going price, or robbed. However it was well within the price I was looking to spend for a gun to fill this niche and that is why I was so excited. Well it ended up that I also got a Glenfield Mod 60 for a whopping $75. I am pretty wound up about that as well and will post pics in the very near future.

So without further ado here is my new to me Ruger Security-Six in stainless with a 6" barrel. It was manufacture in 1976 and shoots like an absolute dream. I am thinking about getting some nice original wood grips for it. I will also be needing a holster. Anybody have any suggestions? Oh, and for the record I paid $300 for it.

Nice...even better price! Have you found a good holster for it.

$300 is a steal!! I bought my used Ruger SP101 3" in 357 for $385.:(

I am glad to hear that I got a good deal, but to be honest it was worth it to me regardless. The more I dry fire it the more I like it. It's stainless so it has some of those really fine scratches, not really even scratches, hell I don't know what they are, but after a good polish it should have a nice shine.

As far as a holster I have found that it fits a holster for the GP100 but not as snug as it should be. However with the thumb break it works just fine. I have heard that there may be some holsters for a S&W K frame that fit it as well. Other than that I am assuming I have to go custom to get a true fit.

Now I need to practice double action revolver shooting. I just love it when I can say, "But honey, I really need to familiarize myself with this gun. I'm sorry I cannot make it to the store with you." I'm not bad with double action, but I certainly still have a loooong way to go too. Huh, kinda contradicting, maybe I am bad. Just more of a reason to practice then I guess.

My Security Six fits just fine in the holster that I have for my S&W Model 10.

Good score - I would buy that off you for $300 in a heart beat!

What a great woods companion, looks great too! I wish Ruger made 1/2 lugged GP-100s factory new -

yeppers. i wouldn't have walked in the store and left that there at that price. good find!

as for a holster....
my simply rugged sourdough panckake just arrived for my 3 inch gp100. you may want to check them out. great work, reasonable prices, and quick turnaround.

"The original grips are not speedloader-friendly"

I would have thought just the opposite. The factory wood grips would be smaller than the Hogue grips in the picture wouldn't they?

That is what I thought. I know they make the bigger wood grips that fit the service or security six, but these are the grips that I was talking about.

Thanks to everybody for the holster suggestions. I also wanted to say that while I would have been happy with my purchase regardless, it is nice to know that I got a good deal. The shop I went to is Tanners and as I said it is my favorite LGS. They are super friendly, extremely helpful, and to top all of that they have the best prices around. What more could you ask for.

Very nice revolver. You did good. Now get a compass to go with your other stuff. If you find th packaderm grips are to big for good control look at houges soft rubber grip. They make the factory grips for ruger and offer better control for many and will let speed loaders work. + there cost is very low. Nice ruger. now you can plan on reloading for it. 357 wadcutters for the range and mid and hot hunting loads.

I love my 6" stainless Security six. I paid either $300 or $350 with extra grips and holster if I recall correctly. I figure on shooting it the most during the Winter months so I don't have to chase down my brass in the snow! :D

Been loading up a bunch of 158 grain lswc for the job. ;)

Thank you. As far as the compass I have a few and a GPS, but those were just a few items I threw together for the photo. Whenever I step into the woods, even for a day hike, I am prepared. To the point where my wife tells me to stop being so anal-retentive.

Do you carry the Declaration of Independence for light reading once you get lost?

That's funny. I actually bought a ten pack of those pocket Constitutions and have a few in different bags. I have read it while waiting at the VA hospital. There, the employees are the lost ones not me. Does that count? :D
