Spent a few hours last night with the offspring. He came over asking about the dove decoys I used to make back in the day, one of his friends has invited him on his first dove hunt. So we took off to the local liquor store and got a few cardboard boxes, then the dollar store for a can of grey paint. Then spent a few hours cutting out dove shaped patterns and watching Stevie Ray Vaugn on the tube. Got to talking about hunts in the past I had. We discussed how to lead doves and how they were harder than they looked. At the end of the night he asked if he could take one of my shotguns. Now the boy already has a shotgun, a nice little mossberg 500 12 ga that would be just fine for busting dove with, but I knew which gun he wanted.
One of my prized possessions is my little Stevens 311A 20ga with her 26 inch barrels, choked full/mod if I guess right and not a scratch on her wood nor a mar in her blueing. I stumbled on her at an estate sale about 4 years ago and adopted her for the nominal fee of $225. The boy, who ignores all of my other SXS's thinks she's just the bee's knees. So how could I say no. So off he went last night with my prized little 20ga and almost 50 of my reloads.
Well, he just dropped by with a grin from ear to ear to show me the 7 dove he managed to bag this morning. He wouldn't say how many shots it took to get those 7, but did say he was going to need to get some more shells before they go out this evening. I sat for an hour as he told me how hard they were to hit, how he kept shooting where they had been instead of where they were, and all the time he kept my little 20ga cradled lovingly in his arms. He finally handed her back to me when he was ready to leave.
Now I don't know much, but I know true love when I see it and it ain't my place to stand in its way. What else could I do? I just handed her back to him. "She's your's now," I told him. "She needs a good home where she'll get some excersize from time to time instead of just hanging on my wall."
Next week I'll teach him to reload and he can take this loader that's taking up space in my closet. When he was born I had this idea on who he would be. I look at him now with his goofy hair and big holes in his ears and realize how wrong I was. He turned out so very much better.:)

I'm glad you guys could share the moment with me

I didn't get a chance to talk to him before I had to go to work tonight, but I'll bet he shot a little better this evening now that she's HIS shotgun. Up until last year he showed no interest in hunting at all, but then his boss took him along on a deer hunt. Cars are still his no1 thing, but this makes for a nice diversion.
