A good knife

So, I'm looking for a good knife, something reasonably priced.
Any brands I need to look at?
I'm not very into knives... I have always had a pocket knife for as long as I can remember though.

I want something that would be good for cleaning, and sturdy.
I really like the looks of a bowie knife, but I'm not sure if it fits my criteria.

There are too many different knife designs out there to give you any advice based on what little you have told us. Why don't you tell us some details about what you'll be using it for day to day and then on rarer occasions. Do you need a folder or fixed blade? Do you need a lock blade or do you prefer slip joints? Do you need tools or just a single blade?

Just a single, fixed blade.
I probably won't be using day-to-day, but it will accompany me on camping trips.
I want it to be a sort of 'just in case' knife, Not an SD knife, But study enough to be used as such.

A 4"-6" Buck knife makes a good utility/hunting/skinning knife, with the larger blades having slightly larger and more comfortable handles. Some in that size range are the Woodsman, the Pathfinder and the Special.

There's lots of knives that will fill the bill and they may have better blades than the Bucks, but Buck knives are popular for a reason, have decent sheaths & are warrantied for life.

My favorite is any SOG fixed blade knife, and my Ka-Bar USMC knife. A good knife for camping and off-roading. Something that can really take the abuse if need be.

If you want a good knife for camping trips then we have tons of recommendations that folks have made. Count on buying a good single edge 3.5 - 4.5 inches fixed blade. From inexpensive Moras from Scandinavia to very high quality custom made knives hand crafted by talented members of THR.

ozark trail fixed blade cheap sharp and works as good as any knife i bought mine from wally world 2 summers ago for 8 bucks seriously i love it cheap so i'm not afraid of using it and surprisingly rugged holds an edge well hey man its not an sog but it slices and dices and goes fishing and hunting just as good

Benchmade offers high quality knives at less than custom knife prices. For example, here's a link to one vendor that carries their Activator+. D2 is tool steel that really holds an edge, but isn't as stainless as some other steels, such as ATS-34 and VG-10.
