I just bought my first centerfire rifle a few days ago. Its a Marlin 336w 30-30. I am wanting to start hand-loading my own ammo for my new gun. i came across this on ebay, it looks to have everything i need, minus dies and stuff, to get going.
What do you guys think?

Lee Challenger Kit on eBay

Good start, but get the loading manual

You will want a loading manual. Either put it on your list of must have items or find a kit that includes it. That Lee setup looks okay, I've not used one though. All those shell holders are pretty good perk though. With RCBS, you have to buy those specific to your needs, they don't come in any of the RCBS kits to my knowledge.

This topic is really timely for me. Bumped into a neighbor the other day and discovered that he does hand loading. He walked me through the process on his Hornady equipment and I came right home and got on the Midway site. I’ll be going with the Hornady Lock-N-Load Classic Single Stage Press Kit which seems to have all the essentials.

Really glad the neighbor is available, otherwise I'd probably be looking for a reloading dvd as well.

Now I gotta clean a place out in the barn so I can do this.

Thanks for the replies. A loading manual is something i will deffinitely buy. also a book of some sort that tells me how much powder and whatnot to put in each shell. Thanks for that link also, thats a better price than what i found on ebay:)

Book of some sort that tells....

That's what the reloading manual is. It goes through the process of reloading as in the "how to" and then the other half of the book is all the "how much" data regarding types of powder and how much for the different bullet weights.

If you are fond of any of the new cartridges, like the WSMs, be sure to check the manual before you purchase. Most kits don't offer books that up to date in my experience. I purchased an RCBS rockchucker master supreme kit and the supplied reloading manual does not cover my 300WSM, the 204 ruger and what not. It came with the speer reloading manual, edition 13.

^ Thanks, so far all i need to reload are 30-30 win shells. those should be in the book cause theyve been around for ever. i might be using it to reload some 7.62x54 cartriges in a while also

Midway is a good, reputable company that's on my short list of places to buy things from. Good service too in my experience.

I've bought a lot of stuff from Midway.

They are good on their prices and the shipping is very good.

If you order anything from Midway make sure you check the box on the order form for a catalog. You will have a ball with it. LOL..

I have dealt with Midway for about 25 years, No Comlaints! Great outfit.

That kit on ebay, price does not includes the $13.50 plus $4.00 each additional item shiping.

The kit with book is $81.99 at Midway, 30-30 2 die set $9.99, shipping about $16.00 or less depending on your zip.

The kit has everything you NEED! However, a loading block would be nice, but can be made out of the insert from a 45ACP ammo box (or similar cartrige size). Eventually you will need a stuck case remover, because it will hapen *trust me*. IMHO its better to have than wait weeks for one to arrive.

Eventually you will need a case trimmer, and will want to get a powder trickler, and a micrometer caliper.

Did you read on the bottom of that ebay ad?

This order gets sent to Lee the day after we recieve payment from you. Lee takes about a week to ship your order out. So normal delivery time is 1.5 to 2 weeks After we recieve payment from you.

So you pay them extra money to send your payment to Lee. hmmmmmmmm...

I bet he has a dealers license and gets it a lot cheaper too.

I have this kit and it works just fine I have loaded several different cailbers with this kit five to be exact. But dont even try without owning a reloading manual and understanding the basics of reloading, Also save up some money and get a PACT electronic powder scale, you will find the scale provided with the kit is junk. BTW PACT makes the RCBS powder scales that why is said get a PACT powder scale, I found this out the hard way.
BTW i bought it from Midway USA

504741 RCBS Stuck Case Remover $13.79 $13.79

729369 Lee RGB 2-Die Set 30-30 Winchester $9.99

820810 Lee Anniversary Reloading Kit with "Modern Reloading" Manual $81.99

ok, so thats what i have in my cart now. i was looking for a case length guage also, but the only one i could find similar was a 30 carbine. is that the same as my 30-30 win?

p.s. sorry for my stupidity:banghead:

Actually I have a dealer's license and am an "authorized" Lee dealer...that really doesn't mean too much. I can buy direct from Lee but it's actually cheaper to buy from Midway with a dealer's discount which is where I usually buy my Lee presses (been selling them for about 2 months now).

All Lee is really good for is buying pieces that Midway or Graf is out of stock of(or pieces they don't stock because of low demand...i.e. 7mm dies)
