There are a great many new people who visit this site looking to buy their first handgun. And those folk aren't familiar with all of the choices. There are a great many more like myself who put together our arsenals many years ago and have failed to keep up with all of the new toys on the market.

My proposal is that we put together a picture compendium of all of the handguns that are available, old and new. When we finish it, we could download the files and be able to run comparisons on our own time.

On the photograph itself should be all of the vital statistics about the gun. I know that many of you are outstanding photographers so you could show your skills as well as your guns, and the final result would be useful and entertaining for all of us. An effort should be made to keep the photo file to no more than 250 KB so loading would be relatively quick.

Further, we should divide our compendium into volumes so the thread wouldn't become too large and slow to load. I would suggest Vol I contain makes beginning with A,B,C,D. After 20 or so pic's, I will create Vol. Ia if needed. Vol.II would be the next four letters and so on. You could put your name or forum name on your entries so you can be recognized for your effort.

We can't get photos (makes and models) in alphabetical order, of course, but we can do that on the picture files we download and keep on our own computers.

Don't post photos to this thread. On this thread I just want to know if you would be willing to participate and whether you think such an endeavor would be useful.

I just quickly cobbled this sample together from items on the CZ site, but this is the sort of format I'm talking about. Yours can be in glorious color. But keep the file size down. And if you aren't a photographer you can swipe a photo from the manufacturer's site.

So, do you want to build this compendium thing?

I think it would be very useful. I am new to handguns, and find myself searching all over the net to get info, reviews, on a gun I might be interested in. I would do whatever I could to help.Let me know what to do.

sure, it would be a GREAT resource! do you have the time? i probably do, but posting on this forum is about as technical as i can get!

What's with the title? Is this a joke? Ya know, A Modest Proposal is probably the most famous satire since Canterbury Tales.

What you're saying is totally impractical. You actually want "all of the handguns that are available, old and new" in a single list? And you want that list to be just pictures? You're talking about at least a few hundred pictures just to cover common models, but you want everything, which is never going to work.

When you add text to a picture, it lowers the quality (unless you use big PNG files), it makes text searches impossible, and it makes correcting mistakes tedious. What if you decided to add a new field of data? What if you decided grip material wasn't important enough to put on every picture? What font do you use? What resolution? What are your quality standards? What do you do when someone submits something that looks terrible? This list would be sloppy and ridiculous.

The ideal thing would be to have a web database setup where people could submit the picture and the specs, then it would be automatically put in a searchable list. That would take a lot of effort on someone's part, though, and you'd need someone to host it. It would have plenty other problems, too, like conflicting data, the same gun with slightly different names, or several pictures for the same gun. Who decides which one is the right one for a list that has a single picture of each gun?

And all that effort would be hard to justify. You can already get this information easily from World Guns, not to mention Wikipedia, Wikimedia, Flickr, and just plain Google Image Search.

Look at the example you gave -- the CZ 75 P-01. Do you think your picture is more useful than what's already out there?

I can get thousands of pictures and the entire history of the weapon in seconds. If I need to compare to another gun, I can open another browser window. It's not the most convenient thing in the world, but that's the nature of the sheer number of firearms out there.

I can understand how it might be useful to have a stripped down list of specs where you could compare the weight and dimensions of one gun to another, but again that would be extremely difficult with just a big pile of pictures that you can't do a text search on.

I just go to budsgunshop.com if I want a general look at a popular gun. They ususally have customer reviews for the popular models as well. If they don't have it... google sure does. I understand the OP's idea tho...he wants a big list of all the guns and their stats... especially the popular "carry" models. It's a decent idea :p

+1 for http://world.guns.ru/main-e.htm

For people like us to compile a list and photos of all handguns is fairly impractical. If you've got the time and money, go for it, but for most of us, a simple internet search and forum questioning will get the answers. And this applies to even new or first time gun owners.

I applaud your interest and devotion to helping others out all the same.

Let the new, prospective gun buyer do like most of us have done: buy a Gun Digest or Shooter's Bible or some such and commence the enjoyable research.

Okay. Impractical idea. Forget it. I wasn't familiar with the World's Guns Site. It is great. Thanks for the link.

I think that this is a great idea. Altough not related,
basenotes(a smell good forum) has a system that works extremely well. Check out how they do their directory, it's very good. Plus you can see how the cologne you have been wearing is rated by people who know what they're talking about. It's the THR of smell-good lol
