Thought I'd let you all know about a new comer on the political scene in the UK: the Libertarian Party. It's no relation of the US Libertarian Party, except that they stand for very much the same thing.
They stand for, in the long term, the wholesale abolition of restrictions on small arms. In the short term, they propose legalising less-lethal self-defence tools like pepper spray, tasers etc, legalising their carry, removing restriction on knife carry, introducing concealed carry pistol permits, legalising handguns, self-loading rifles and 'assault shotguns' and making firearms certificates simpler and easier to get. They would also remove muzzle loading guns from firearms certificates so that anyone could buy them anywhere.
So after their first term you would need to get a permit to own guns (no serious criminal history etc) like you do now, but if you met the requirements the police would have to give you one - right now it's up to their discretion. It would also be issues straight away, rather than needing to wait 3-6 months like you do now, and you would not be required to keep your guns locked up. You could then buy whatever you wanted, except machineguns, rocket launchers etc, and guns wouldn't be registered. You could then get a CCW permit (with a small training requirement) and carry your guns concealed. Anyone would be able to buy pepper spray etc and carry it without any kind of permit, same for knives.
They're very small, and only been around a since January, but growing
