I have an older .270 that is built on a Mauser action. I also have a .270 that is built on a model 700 action. These rifles were all individually specced out and built by my grandfather. Here is my question.

Is a mauser action, a mauser action. If I were to have that mauser .270 from a pile of parts, could i build it into anything as long as it were a long action?

I am considering building my own custom rifle and was just curious. I see people using old mauser actions, 700 actions, etc... Can you use an old Mosin action? I am guessing that the bolt would limit you to a rimmed cartridge such as the 7.62x54R. This is what I have talked myself into, someone let me know if I am on the right track. Thanks!

If it's a good name & year of 98 Mauser action, you can build just about anything on it, including standard belted Magnums.

Can you use an old Mosin action?
Good for gunsmith practice maybe.

But I would not suggest you put a lot of time, effort, and money in one.

In the end, it is still a Mossy, with all the attendent problems like:
Poor resale value no matter what you do to it.
A stiff action.
A terrible trigger.
An even worse safety operation.
Goofy scope mounting.
A magazine that doesn't play well with others.

most mausers are very good actions, i have a tub with 7 or 8 stripped actions, another 7 or 8 barreled actions & at least another 30 donor rifles sitting in various corners of my gunroom for future projects. they are good for anything up to 375 h&h length with proper bottom metal.

i've also built a few mosin sporters and rimless conversions are much easier than most people think. as far as rebarreling a mosin and doing the rimless conversion it might add another three hours to the build over a standard rebarrel back to a rimmed cartridge. timney makes an excellent trigger for the mosin.

220 swift, 243, 308, 260 rem, & 6.5x55 all fit the magwell very nicely, 30-06 length cartridges will need the receiver notched to eject a live round with most bullets. the finns have built them up to 300 win mag.
the standard scope mounts that are available are way to blocky for my taste but people have adapted the older redfield mannlicher schoenauer mounts, the newer egw MS swing mounts and claw mounts for MS rifles to the mosin.
i have a lyman 36 swing sight for my 375x54r mosin pig gun project
