A question for the Garand experts here.

Greetings all,

Just picked up a Garand in 7.62 and have a question about the barrel marks. This is on a Springfield receiver in the 2,500,000 serial range.

The barrel is blued, not parked, with drawing # "LMR D6535448 7 55 A43" and below that in larger letters "7.62 NATO M II".

All lettering is filled with off white or light yellow paint.

I'm concerned that I may have gotten a Navy chamber insert Garand, can anyone tell me about the barrel markings??

I'm no expert.... just an "accumulator" of shooter grade M1's.

Sounds to me like an insert too. If I wuz you I'd go over to Culvers page and ask the Garand Gurus.

That barrel

is a Line Materials barrel. They were one of the subcontractors in postwar production, and the barrels were aminly used in International Harvester rifles, I believe. Since most M1s went through arsenal overhaul at some point, wherein they were disassembled, cleaned and checked, and then reassembled completley randomly, you end up with things like an IHC barrel on a Springfield receiver, etc. I don't think any LMR barrels were made in 7.62 NATO; they were just supplied with insert and additional barrel markings added. I also think most of such rifles went to the superior service branch.....THE UNITED STATES NAVY.

Does the 7.62 NATO stamping appear to be made at a different time, such as being deeper than the rest or not so finely stamped? if so, I would venture that it is an insert rifle.
