About a week ago I first ordered the Znich, originally just for the collector's value alone. So heres my little mini review, and why it found its way from my box of misc AK stuff I'm stockpiling onto my home defence rifle.

Upon opening the box I noticed a amber colored, waxy substance on the main tube it was....cosmo! Apparently the unit has been packed in it at one time or another and though well cleaned by the time I got it there was enough left over for me to get it all over the rest of the rifle. The Light breaks down into 3 main parts straight away and they are as follows. The Tailcap, which houses the on/off switch. The main body which houses the 4aa batteries in a funky removable..doohickey. Then theres the head unit which houses the replaceable bulb and the focus thingy. All three parts simply screw on and a rather ample rubber gasket is present all over this thing. It is indeed, 100% waterproof.

One can focus the beam, which while not as bright as massively bright as some surefires throws a very bright light. Even at full tight focus theres a soft ambient light that radiates infront of the light so I can hold the rifle at shoulder or at the hip and still have enough light to see where my feet are going. The on/off switch is actually a ruberized switch set in the tail peice, and you can easily flip it from on to off without much worry of an accidental on.

With the light mounted my AK is a touch barrel heavy, the light itself is made of steel and is a serious peice of equipment. My AK isnt exactly a featherweight to begin with however and after a few minutes I could nearly forget it was there. With the sun down finally and no nosy neighbors to call the cops I slipped out back to see how far it'd cast the beam. Focused, I could see clearly from the front to the back of our 2 acre plot without much effort. I'm not saying its the best light ever made, however any accessory which is as tough and utilitarian as the rifle its affixed too is a winner for me.

Call me satisfied!

I'll get some pictures of the light mounted on my Saiga tomarrow, AK owners I highly suggest this thing. I'm on the verge of getting another one for my SKS!

You say not as bright as some surefires, but where would you say it falls with in comparison? A 65 lumen P60? 120 lumen P61?

Tough to say, I'm comparing it to whatever it is my friend has. I'd say its somewhere in the 4+ cell maglight range, not as tight of a beam however. I looked around but couldnt find a measurement.

I was talking about for the Znich, I cant remember what said surefire is off the top of my head. Will it suffice to say I could throw good usable light on any individual less than 60 yards away that would allow CLEAR and easy identification?

Well, i was saying you could identify your friends surefire by that page, then compare the beam to his. It would give a good benchmark.

Will it suffice to say I could throw good usable light on any individual less than 60 yards away that would allow CLEAR and easy identification?
That helps.

I've been thinking about getting one of these for awhile, i just wasnt sure how bright they were, or what their beam was like.

I called he has the G2, his light is alittle brighter than this thing. The Znich takes 4 AA batteries, and not those stupid uber batteries.

Cool thanks. Did i understand you correctly when you said the beam on the znich was tighter?

I can focus it to a very tight beam with abit've radiation, sort've akin to a spotlamp or widen it out to cover a rather impressive area. I will say this, this thing is tough as snot. The front and back parts are connected in such a way that once I have it clamped in place like I want it I can remove the front end (without the squared off edges hitting the barrel) or the back to change the batteries. I can, by the way apparently change this hologen bulb for a brighter one, this is me guessing that when this thing was cosmoed it had the "Military grade" bulb mine still has for "Comrade soldier".

That said, I dont know for a fact that I can switch it out to anything brighter but the connector isnt anything totally bizarre as far as I can tell. I work in a hardware store for a living so, while I'm not sure the exact model It doesnt appear to be anything special.

freedomoptics.com claims a 'Halogen Lamp (HPR-53)'. Not sure where you get one, or what you could replace it with, but if anyone knew it would be someone on www.candlepowerforums.com

Thanks for the review, i might have to get one of those.
