Well, more about the little horn on top. That was my priming horn, which I don't use anymore because I either prime from the horn, or from the pistol flask. But it was a gift and of much sentimental value. So I got to thinking, that I could make a it into a regular horn for the Great Plains pistol. But to be sure, I filled it with powder, then weighed it to see if it would hold enough.
Them horns hold more than one would think. That little priming horn held way over 1000 grains. Doing the math, that's enough for nine loads in my Jeager. I only carry six extra patched ball, three in the loading block, six or so paper cartridges, and one load in the gun. So, now it's my Jeager Horn. !! Drilled out the priming valve and filled it with Swiss 1.5fg.
But that made me realize how much the horns hold. The bottom horn is for Bessie, and although she has a voracious appetite for powder, I carry the same load out for her when out in the field. Two patched balls in a loading block, four ball and patch to reload the block, one in the gun, and six or so paper cartridges. The middle horn was my Jeager horn.
So, the moral of the story is that I'll be paying attention to how much powder I put in my horns, used to just fill them up. But why carry that much extra weight?
Something weird about the picture above. The top horn is way smaller than the others, than it looks in the picture. ? Don't know why. And, the bottom horn is larger than the middle horn.
