A very “special” nightstand gun

Just starting out on my own my first choice (actually I didn't have all that many guns to choose from), for home defense was a vintage 4" barrel S&W Model 10. That along with a Mag-Lite 3 "D" cell battery flashlight and two HKS speedloaders, gave me peace of mind that I would be well protected should the need have arose.

Since then I have switched over to semi-autos, first with a Colt Combat Commander .38 Super and later a Beretta Model 84 .380. Nowadays it's a SIG P229 with a SIG light/laser combo and a Maverick Model 88 12 gauge nearby.

Nice gun and good choice of load for self defense.

My primary gun around the house (it is never further than arms reach) and nightstand gun is a 6" GP100 loaded with some sort of hollow point. Right now it is loaded with Blazer 158gr jhp aluminum case. Not the strongest stuff by any definition (the 38spl you are using is just as strong) but it is soft on recoil and can still get the job done.

You are going to die.
You don’t love your family enough to protect them.
It’s an antiquated design.
Revolvers are nowhere near as reliable as a modern semiauto.
You will not survive a shootout when MS13 does a home invasion.
It’s not even plastic, for Gods sake.
Nice boat anchor ya got there. Sit in a rocking chair with it?
Everyone thinks they have enough ammo, until they don’t!
No one ever survived a shootout and said “I had too much ammo.”

Did I miss any? ;)

As I glance down at the Ruger SP101 in my waistband.

hanging on a hook on the side of my refrigerator in my kitchen…

I have a pair of S&W model 15 revolvers with 4 inch barrels and HOGUE grips. They are the same thing as a model 67, but with blue steel instead of stainless. I use them mostly as reange guns and their actions have smoothed out very well. I keep WINCHESTER PDX-1 jhp ammo in the one I use as a house gun. I have used FEDERAL HST 130 grain jhp in the past, but it has become very hard to find at a reasonable price and is slow to reload because of the wadcutter shaped bullet. Recoil is about the same, so no problem there and the PDX shoots accurately in my guns.
I used to keep DOUBLE TAP +P 125 grain jhp as my reload, but the PDX seems to do the job, just as well with less recoil and noise.

I also use the PDX load in my .357 magnums. More power sounds great until you have to deal with the recoil, noise and flash. Modern premium bullets give me the stopping power I want without the other problems.
