With all the "gun control" discussion taking place in the media it is about time to remind the people we put in the House and Senate what we expect of them.

Here's an example "note" to email to them (look in Resources for how to email them if you don't already have your Rep and Senators emails saved).

Anti Second Amendment activists are exploiting the recent tragedy in Oregon to further their anti-gun agenda and I expect you to oppose these efforts vigorously. 1) All empirical evidence, as well as plain old common sense, shows that gun control does not prevent violence and only leaves law-abiding citizens defenseless against it.
2) The Second Amendment clearly states "the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed and proposed "gun control" legislation is clearly infringement of our right guaranteed under the Constitution.
3) The latest public polls show that the majority of Americans oppose any new gun control schemes. We will be paying close attention to our members of Congress.

As your constituent, I ask you oppose any and all new gun control schemes, restricting or limiting or controlling my ability to purchase or own any firearm.

Respectfully,

ZZXXYY

2) The Second Amendment clearly states "the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed" and proposed "gun control" legislation is clearly an infringement of our inherent human right that is guaranteed under the Constitution.

I think we need to stress that our right is an inherent human right that predates governments and constitutions. Just like "they" repeat lies until they become truth...we need to repeat the truth to ensure it remains truth.

I would respectfully suggest that the "Rights" aspect of any gun discussion is a dead horse; "Infringement" is no longer understood to have any damping effect on "Common Sense" gun control; and the voting principals are inundated w/ "Polls" that cite whatever position is being hawked du jur..

That said, I do recommend hammering your Reps with both reason and suggested paths.

To wit, something I wrote to Frank Wolf about three years ago in this very subject (funny how the subject repeats itself):

Dear Mr. Wolf,

You have already received one letter from me on the issue of arms and the citizen,
and this is another. Please place me in the NO column in the current frenzy of gun
control discussion.

I have just watched near hysterical editorial reaction to the National Rifle Association’s
recommendation to merely recognize Evil for what it is – and to neither ignore it, nor
to disarm in its face.

I totally agree with that position -- as does my wife who is an elementary school teacher.
Continued soft-target/gun-free zones based solely upon a philosophy of “wish-it-were-so”
are an invitation to disaster. We’ve just seen such a disaster.

It is a suicidal mindset.

I further believe that simplistic attempts to disarm your law-abiding citizens of the kind
of semi-automatic weapons as they have possessed for generations in the face of that Evil
is no less suicidal. It doesn’t address the problem at all. Evil has a lot of options.

We need to come to our senses.

• Increase the mental health and court system to recognize, and deal with,
those who pose risk.
• Accordingly stiffen the eligibility requirements within background checks
• Permit – no, encourage – those “soft” target zones to consider equipping
and training for active defense. Disaster strikes in seconds.

Take action that might actually help. Do not allow those who would advocate “click your
heels together three times and "wish-it-were-so” make things worse.

Sincerely,
yr obt srvt,
etc, etc, etc
