Ok, here's the situation. A co-worker is thinking of purchasing my Savage Scout rifle (10fcm) in .308W for hunting (pig, deer). He is small statured and has a past collarbone injury (fracture in several places) on his shooting side. His doctor has told him that he doesn't need to stop shooting but not to go overboard on caliber, i.e., nothing to savage.

So, being a rookie regarding hunting and loadings in general, what .308W loads would be suitable for the job, but lower in recoil? We're in NorCal, and I assume his hunting would be in this state and perhaps also Idaho (?) since he has family there IIRC.

Personally, I've only fired surplus Aussie F4 7.62 through the rifle, and found it mellow enough. He probably will too once he puts some rounds downrange through it, but we're interested in some hunting loads that are on the lower side of the scale, recoil wise. Any general tips or advice, specific favorites, etc?

Please respond in this thread or pm.

Thanks,
EricO

I can't speak specifically to the .308 version of that, but the .30-06 version of that load which should be functionally the same works great on deer. My hunting buddy uses those on MT Mule deer with good result every year X multiple deer. All so far have been one shot drops.

He says the recoil feels "light .243'ish" out of his wood stocked M70.
