I tumbled a bunch of cases with Lyman's high polish media, which leaves a rust colored dust on and inside the cases. Is there some sort of procedure to clean the cases following tumbling so I dont get that stuff inside my dies?

Thanks,
Joe

I have read about other guys who clean their brass with hot water and a mild detergent to remove the lubricant used during sizing. I think one key was to use real hot water so that brass would dry quickly.

You can also wash the cases then put out evenly on a old cookie sheet then put in the oven at 200 degrees for a short while to dry. Watch what type of detergent is used, some types leave a film.

I tumble mine in some plain walnut media after a tumble in that Red Lyman product. No use washing them if I can just clean it off with another few minutes of tumbling. I only use the Lyman stuff for the stubborn brass when needed.

I have the same thing hapen using that Lyman media, I guess the red stuff if something like Jeweler's Rouge. I've never actually bothered to clean it off as it doesn't seem to cling on and Lyman don't seem to advise trying to get rid of the dust either.

If you are tumbling them with case lube on them, i.e after re-sizing this can really attract the stuff and it's not good. The spray on Hornady One Shot claims that it will be taken off in the tumbler as it soaks into the media...it does to a point.

If you are really concerned about it switch to the non-treated Tuff-Nut media which does an equally good job.

I have also found that the best way to remove any resizing lubricant along with any burn rings is to wash the cases in Birchwood Casey Brass Cartridge Cleaner.
