Stopped at Sportsman's Warehouse north of Denver (84th & I-25) yesterday and picked up a pack of primers amongst other goodies.

They asked for my birthday at the register.

OK, I fussed about it slightly and asked the clerk if that was store policy, or what.

She said it was Federal law that only went into effect "a couple of months ago."

OK, we all know "they're" nit picking away at anything gun related, but I hate to confess I never heard of that before.

Federal law/regulation? Where did it come from, and when?

Just demand to see a copy of the statute. If there's a regulation to that effect, you can be sure they'll be required to have a copy of it somewhere. If not, they're making stuff up to cover for some rinky-dink store policy.

At my nearest Sportsman's Warehouse I get carded every time I buy powder. They said it was law when I asked, but I didn't think to, or have the time to, ask to see a copy of the statute. Maybe I'll allow myself a little extra time next time I go.

I don't think I'd make a big fuss about it, but I'd like the truth. The clerk didn't even ask for verification, I just told her my birth year and that was that (there's no way I could be mistaken for under 21.)

It irks me that I stopped at Roger's "The Reloader's Corner" on 58th Avenue in Arvada for some other goodies you can't get anywhere else and plumb forgot to ask Roger about it.

Could be the same situation as with buying .22s in the big chains. Stuff like that just comes up in the register and the clerks just ask if it's for a pistol or rifle and don't know why.

18USC Sec. 921: Definitions
(17)(A) The term ``ammunition'' means ammunition or cartridge cases,
primers, bullets, or propellent powder designed for use in any firearm.
18USC Sec. 922: Unlawful acts
(b) It shall be unlawful for any licensed importer, licensed
manufacturer, licensed dealer, or licensed collector to sell or
deliver--
(1) any firearm or ammunition to any individual who the licensee
knows or has reasonable cause to believe is less than eighteen years
of age, and, if the firearm, or ammunition is other than a shotgun
or rifle, or ammunition for a shotgun or rifle, to any individual
who the licensee knows or has reasonable cause to believe is less
than twenty-one years of age;

As primers fall under the definition of ammunition and one has to be age requirements for ammunition, it would certainly seem that one must be of age to legally purchase primers.

230RN, Do they have a decent gun selection at that Sportsman's Warehouse? Hadn't heard of it until now.

I can't testify for the ones in Colorado, but in Utah they have one of the larger selections around. They seem to focus on hunting rifles/shotguns and various handguns, but have some tacticool things as well.

That's kind of a judgement call. I guess they've got less of a selection than the Gander Mountain up a little further up I-25 on Grant and 95th St, but then again, I've never purchased a firearm from either of them. (The Sportsman's Warehouse is on 84th, so you're talking about a mile.)

They've got a pretty good art collection near the men's room, and I sort of keep an eye on it because the art would make great "substantial" but not "budget-breaking" gifts for the sportsman.

The two stores are close enough to each other that comparison shopping between the two is pretty easy, and you don't actually have to get on and off the highway to flit 'twixt them... Grant Street parallels I-25 and I do my flitting between them on Grant Street.

Actually, my latest firearms purchase was at Big5 on Kipling and about 50th, and I was pretty impressed with their customer service. That's where I bought a fine condition Mosin-Nagant 91/30 recently for $US 89.00. (I don't know why everybody says they kick so much... much less than a Springfield in .30-06.)

ETA I plumb forgot to thank Jorg for the real info. Thanks!
